The Andrews community applauds a contract for paving 271 city blocks and a separate city block paving effort of six blocks. Homeowners face about 1.70 per linear foot for curb and gutter, prompting civic sacrifice and hopeful sign of town growth as more residents sign up to complete the project.

Heavy weekend rains soaked moisture-barren soil across Andrews County. Total rainfall ranged from a quarter inch to seven inches in eight miles west and southwest of Andrews, boosting pasture, grass, and cattle condition. County agent Pete Millican praised the relief, noting oats and cotton planting could restart as fields dry.
The 6th Annual Andrews High School Rodeo opens with a parade and three night shows featuring bronco riding calf roping bull scrambles and more. Contests prizes and a rodeo queen accompany dance events at the county youth center with stock from Earth Texas and sponsorship by W W Branscom.
Fourteen Junior High school safety patrol members were honored with a party at the Community building last Thursday night. Prizes and gifts from local merchants recognized their traffic directing work during school rush hours. The City of Andrews issued a $70,000 building permit to Alden Rogers Homes for seven 1200 square foot houses on Southwest 13th Street in the Underwood addition. Construction will begin immediately.
Fire gutted the interior of Paul and Mrs Pike’s home at Humble Means Camp while the family attended a Shamrock funeral. Company fire equipment stopped the blaze from consuming the exterior. Workers planned a pot of food for the couple upon their return today.
Oil operators announce multiple drilling plans in North and Northwest Andrews County. Felmont Oil and Lotus Oil target a 9500 foot Devonian wildcat near Frankel City. Murphy Baxter lists a 6150 foot well 15 miles north of Andrews. Lawton Oil targets 5200 foot No 1-B Bird 17 miles northeast of Andrews. Magnolia Petroleum plans a 8500+ foot deep test near Ellenburger area 18 miles southeast of Andrews.
The 109th judicial district is divided into two by House Bill 811, creating Judicial District 143 to include Reeves, Loving and Ward counties. Andrews Winkler and Crane remain in the 109th district. the reform may take effect in August once signed by the Governor.
A San Antonio firm was low bidder on about 277 blocks of city and county paving. Cen-Tex Paving submitted the low bid for 271 blocks in town at 310 143.71 dollars. Gen-Tex bid 15 133.90 for six blocks in northwest Andrews. Coins Construction bid 498 000 dollars for the larger contract, with county judge Milton Ramsey approving 160 days to complete.
Andrews city audit for the year ending March 31 shows total income of 268 226 69 and expenditures down 11 835 85 ending balance 230 625 78. Water department income rose to 97 527 41 and sewer service income to 27 154 34. Audit by Criswell and Mus of Odessa.
Miss Janna Lou Way daughter of Mr and Mrs Boyd Stairs started Monday as receptionist and typist in the Stanolind Oil and Gas Company office.
The Andrews Lions Club will select a county representative for the 21st Midland Rodeo at a noon luncheon Tuesday. Eligible single women aged 19 to 25 may contact Mrs C. D. Huckabee at the Fashion Shoppe. The winner receives a 25.00 bond and public introduction at the rodeo opener.
