In Andrews editorial view moving the courthouse to the business district costs 110000 but pays off over 50 to 75 years. The Andrews City Council approved 35 additional water meters at a Wednesday meeting after installing 50 meters earlier, with new lines extending service west from the main near Hi-Way Garage to Dr Little’s rental and nearby towers. Water will reach Speed addition as two inch line work continues, and the council may supply water to the school football field if the school furnishes the pipe.
Burglars broke into two Andrews businesses between midnight and 5 30 am Thursday stealing cash and merchandise valued at four to five hundred dollars. Cash, cigarettes, meat, and bacon were taken from the grocery and market. Watches and jewelry valued at about 150 dollars plus 40 dollars in cash vanished from the Andrews Hotel Pharmacy. Back doors were pried open and a fingerprint expert from Lubbock assisted local officers.
Humble camp sports report notes floodlit baseball at all hours and two recent games. Wasson District beat the locals a week ago, then fell to Andrews on Wednesday. Ira A. Wimberly leads the team with James Reed as captain and pitcher. A ladies team is forming under manager Mrs. Frank Fee. Social notes mention open singing night hosted by Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Little and guests.
Deputy State Superintendent E Eston Day inspected Andrews schools Tuesday to assess student work and the district’s affiliation status. Head Beane expects a favorable report with plans to add Home Economics and Farm and Shop to raise the district’s affiliation before next fall.
For the 1939-1940 school year Superintendent T D Hamilton announces staff and schedule changes. New hires include a high school principal and a boys athletics coach. T K Price will be principal, coaching position open with several applicants from colleges and West Texas. A new field is planned northwest of the high school, with sod and seating. Existing staff and assignments are listed, with caretakers and bus drivers to be hired later.
The Faithful Workers S. S. Class at the Baptist church held a regular monthly business and social meeting on Wednesday April 6 at the home of Mrs. L. J. Stanford. A social hour followed with refreshments for Mesdames Sam M. Smith J P Williams H Wilson C E Burn J W Moore Stella Echols N E Wat kins Geo Arnold O G Weatherby Virgil Brooks and L J Stanford. They plan to meet Wednesday afternoon May 31 in the home of Mrs. Sam M. Smith.
Officials present an exhibit this week in the News stand at the Post Office illustrating a Home Management Plan for a five person family. The plan, prepared by Clifton W. Cole and Helen L. Weatherford, outlines a yearly budget for living expenses on a typical farm and a 75 percent live at home program.
Organization of an Andrews soft ball team began Thursday with a subscription for equipment. A large portion of local business men favor the group, and once perfected, games will be played on the local field two or three times weekly.
Mrs I O Ingram III was rushed to an Odessa hospital Wednesday night with pneumonia. Late reports indicate she is resting better but remains in serious condition.
The Andrews Grade School plans a graduation program emphasizing student involvement. Thirty seventh and sixth grade pupils will perform musical numbers under WES Dickerson and Miss Imogene Mangum, with speeches prepared by Mrs. Rufus F. Walker’s department. The class includes Maxine Barnes, Charles Champlin, Martha Lou Colley, Dorothy Mae Cotton, Jack Davis, Kathryn Davis, and others.
Rev Roy Clayton to deliver the baccalaureate sermon at 11 o clock Sunday May 11 at Andrews Baptist Church. Andrew High seniors present their annual Senior play Friday night May 5 at 8 30 in the high school auditorium. Admission 15c children 25c adults. Proceeds fund a class trip to Big Bend Country and part of New Mexico.
Andrews County voters will decide Saturday whether to authorize 110000.60 in bonds to buy a site and build a new court house. They will also vote on moving the court house nearer the business district, with strong expectation for approval of the relocation. Sam Smyth and J. Beene are in Austin this week on business.
Andrews Mustangs open fall expectations with a 6 to 2 victory over the Seminole Indians in a Springs practice. Thompson Fitzgerald Walters and Irwin starred on offense while Fitzgerald recovered a blocked kickoff for two points. Veteran names and several promising youngsters populate the roster as the team readies for next season.
