A recession is described as a period of belt tightening while a low mood happens when there is no belt to tighten and no fund to support the effort. The text contrasts financial strain with emotional distress during downturns.
In Sunday's News we explained Andrews Gas Company base rates and the monthly pass-through adjustment from Pioneer Natural Gas. We show how old contracts and new ones set gas costs, and illustrate a sample bill with a 20 000 cubic feet usage plus month to month adjustments. Page 12 SANDS.
Texas Electric Service Co filed with Andrews city officials and the Public Utility Commission for a 23.6 percent system wide revenue increase. The plan aims to raise about 79 million dollars to fund lignite and nuclear plant construction reducing natural gas use, with residential bills rising about 25 percent on average.
A full slate of events is planned for Monday July Fourth at Lake Side Park starting at 10 a.m. The program includes turtle and horned road races, family sack races, archery, horseshoe and washer contests, Flair Fair Arts and Crafts booths, and concession stands. The Chamber open house runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with building ceremonies at 2 p.m. Prizes, a watermelon contest at 3 p.m., a karate demonstration at 3:30 p.m., race trophies at 5 p.m., and a Mesquite Burners barbecue at 5:30 p.m. Plates cost $2.50.
Two AHS diamond players signed letters of intent to college baseball scholarships. Jimmy Tompkins of 711 NW 12th Place earned a Ranger Junior College offer after earning All-District honors and MVP shares with Linver Mosby. Bill Clift of 313 SW 13th signed with Ranger, praised by parents and coaches as Ranger’s strong athletic reputation.
Ricky Loyd of 204 NW 6th was arraigned on burglary charges with bond set at 5000 after surrendering on a warrant. About 700 dollars in goods were taken from Willis Mays residence while owners were away. Deputy Roger Andrews said Randy Loyd, linked to earlier burglaries, also was held on bond.
City police describe multiple thefts and vandalism incidents over the weekend. A tiller was stolen from 702 NW 10th worth about 300 dollars. Vandals damaged a high school field, irrigation pipe damage, and a baseball backstop. Gasoline ($30) stolen from a Seller Oil Field Service truck. a 1974 Ford window broken with 200 dollar damage. Tapes clothing and jewelry stolen from Golf Course Road car. Vandalism included a barricade stop sign and irrigation pipe at 500 SW Ave. F, and gray primer paint sprayed on a car and house at 600 NE Ave F. No damage estimate available.
