News Receives Press Awards in Texas gathering

The Andrews County News finished as runner up for general excellence in Division 4 at the Texas Press Association awards in Galveston. Editor Don Ingram won second place for a feature on a Scottish terrier found in a golf shed after a missing report. City Council Delays Gas Rate Hike Decision

Tuesday study session delayed Andrews Gas Company's bid for a 25 percent rate increase. Council members agreed more analysis was needed and to hold a follow up session next week. Howard Tucker and lawyers warned of losses and unpaid bills, citing 47500 dollars in year losses and about double that in unpaid Pioneer Natural Gas charges.

Police Report Thefts and Vandalism Elsewhere This Week

Police report several thefts and vandalism incidents this week. A bike was stolen from Mark Friemel near NW 12th by Thursday morning at the high school. Rosa Medina said vandals broke the rear window of her 1974 Chevrolet Suburban on Thursday night. See THEFTS, Page 10. At a meeting, Andrews Gas Company officials argued for fair rates while council debated suspending adjustments. The proposed changes would raise minimum bills and MCF charges, with city leaders aiming to offer immediate relief without harming the company, amid warnings of possible supply issues and unpaid bills to Pioneer. Widow Sues For $1 Million Over Oil Field Death

The widow Helen Lytle and her son file a $1 million suit in 109th District Court against Technical Tubing Testers Inc alleging negligence after William F. Lytle II, a lease operator for Exxon Oil, died April 11 when a 12 to 15 pound oil field tool fell from about 90 feet. The petition claims death due to the negligence of Technical Tubing Testers Inc employees.

Special Election Called to Fill Place 2 on City Council

A special election is authorized after Councilman Raymond Sharbutt resigned and moved to Odessa. The election to fill Place 2 will be held Saturday August 13 at City Hall. Filing for candidates ends July 13 ballot positions drawn July 15 absentee voting runs July 25 through August 9.

AHS Tennis Player Joni Russell Faces Knee Surgery

Joni Russell, an AHS tennis player and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Russell, will undergo knee ligament surgery in Midland. She helped the Mustangs win a district title last year and reached state competition, pairing with an Amarillo player to win the doubles championship at the Amarillo Tennis Open and placing 9th at the State Sectional Tournament among the state's top 53 youth players.
