Dr. Miller Uptown of Beloit College argues society should honor achievers over misfits and underachievers. He advocates an “upper dog” ideal where individuals strive, take responsibility, and improve themselves and their communities.
Andrews Evening Lions president and 1st vice-president attended the Lions International Convention in New Orleans this week. About 150,000 delegates attended. local members and spouses joined the event, including Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wright and Mr. and Mrs. Gabe Natividad.
Lake Side Park hosts a full day of Fourth celebration events starting at 10 a.m. with sack races archery turtle races and more. Activities include a women’s softball tournament arts and crafts fair concession stands a watermelon eating contest karate demonstration and a large fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are 50 cents for students under 12 and 1.50 for adults. The Andrews American Little League hosts the District 5 Texas Teenage Baseball Tournament beginning July 25 with teams from nearby cities.
District 573 reviews the past year with district governor John Tyler as Rotarians install new officers. Albert Sybesma becomes president with Bob Henderson as secretary and Austin Bristow as treasurer. New directors are Doug Waller and Reeder Price.
A 23 year old Midland man, Jessie C. Gonzales, died when his car overturned about six miles north of the Midland Air Terminal on Telephone Road near Farm-to-Market Road 1788. The crash occurred around 3 to 3:50 a.m. Thursday. his Ford landed in a pasture after crossing barriers and fencing.
Andrews County recorded three traffic fatalities in June with three Thursday wrecks. A 23 year old Midland man died on Telephone Road in a northbound loss of control. a 23 year old Andrews man died on the Seminole highway when his tanker overturned. an Odessa girl, 18, died north of Frankel City on Burma Road. The incidents all occurred on Thursdays and involved loss of control en route north, prompting DPS to warn drivers to be cautious this Independence Day period.
City police report multiple thefts and vandalism in Andrews this week. Odessa resident N M Regan said a cement mixer valued 1150 was stolen from a Golf Course Road site. Rose Medina reported a damaged rear car window on a 1971 Chevrolet. Randy Hamel reported a missing .22 pistol last month. Jamie Ham reported a missing tape player worth 30. Mrs Novelli said a dumpster was damaged valued at 100.
Santa Fe Pipeline stored LPG in two large underground salt domes near Andrews County starting last year. About 250 000 barrels of butane are kept, with 40 000 barrels moved daily to Houston via intrastate pipelines. The facility uses six pumps and fiberglass pits for brine, reporting smooth operation aside from drowned rats.
