Mig Springs plans a community rodeo from June 3 to 25 with prize money totaling several thousand dollars. Town pride runs high as men and women wear cowboy attire to promote the event and volunteers spread word locally. The writer urges Andrews residents to unite and invest effort to improve their town with parks libraries and other amenities.
Former Andrews County Attorney J P Williams was arrested on charges of fraudulently selling county bonds in 1936. He faces accusations of misappropriating 6500 in bonds from Andrews County and 6000 in city issued bonds from O Donnell. Bonds were first discovered missing after county officials found old German bonds in a Midland bank safe. Williams was jailed in Lubbock and later moved to Seminole and then to local jail. Appearance bond set at 4000, no confession yet.
Odessa June 14 Ector county records another death in a week of violence with five victims four days. William Arthur Hill 46 a unit operator for E L Farmer and associates oil field contractors died after a fall from an oil derrick four miles north of Duro in the Harper Pool. Rites for Mrs Pennington and Cullins were held today and services for Pennington are pending. Arrangements for Hills services were incomplete tonight.
Austin June 14 The Legislature voted an additional 100000 to defray expenses bringing total to 850000 making this the most expensive session in state history The House approved 750000 and concurred in a Senate increase of 25000 The session will run 163 days at adjournment with daily pay 10 and 5 since The note also mentions Andrews County 50 cents for the rest of the year and Harold Roberts visiting Sylvester Texas relatives this week.
Two Odessa shops announce major clearance events this week. Dunlap launches a broad June Clearance Sale after overstock purchases. The Model Shop promotes an Our Word of Honor Sale with tickets inviting customers to register for an all expense trip to the New York World’s Fair.
Mrs. Mattie Boyett of Sabine County Texas reports a miraculous recovery from glaucoma after two days of prayer. The 69 year old widow had been blind for fifteen years since losing an eye and the film over the remaining eye had disappeared revealing restored vision. A Sabine County doctor could not explain the sudden improvement.
After a week trial Humble Oil and Refining Company will retail a third grade leaded gasoline at all service stations in North and West Texas It replaces the third grade white gasoline and carries an octane number of 67 with better anti neck properties The fuel was earlier introduced on the Gulf Coast and in the Midwest firms.
Reader John G Little details the fair highlights from the Du Pont exhibit. He praises innovations such as moisture resistant fabrics fireproof coatings and impregnation methods. He notes artificial rubber Lucite nylon Drene shampoo and television with voder sound to light demonstrations. General Electric shows light hearing and color effects while hand made light bulbs fascinate. The Calvacade of the Golden West traces California history with trains and the Golden Spike.
Mr J M Hinkle of Dallas Texas has accepted a position at Andrews Hotel Pharmacy after leaving Davis Drug Company in Dallas. He comes highly recommended and the News extends a warm welcome, hoping the city offers him the warmest reception yet.
Texas PWA reports total project value at 224 million dollars with 1,205 projects statewide. Andrews County is the lone county not sharing PWA funds, as projects include schools water works highways and city buildings across Texas.
J P Williams former Andrews County Attorney filed in District Court seeking 9250 dollars claiming county owes him for legal services in 1936 connected to a 92000 dollar Highway Commission suit. He says the commission was represented by him and county refused payment. asks court to compel payment with costs and damages.
Cotton advocate F. E. Lichte of Texas A. and M. College Extension Service argues for higher cotton use in existing products and new applications. He cites roads bound with cotton cloth, cheaper cement in cotton bags, asphalt treated cotton for ditch linings, and cotton houses with steel frames priced around 2 200 dollars.
Magnola Petroleum No. 1 Leta Jones in section 11 block A-42 is drilling below 3 250 feet in anhydrite near Fuhrman pool. Richmond Drilling No. 1 University in section 25 block 12 University Land is drilling below 3 312 feet after topping Yates sand at 2 888 feet. The latter test may be 115 feet higher structurally than Maer Stainforth No. 1 Meadows & Johnson three miles east. Chester Etter and wife visited friends in O Donnell.
