First graders will attend half day sessions this fall as 1955 term opens. Supt. T. A. Roach told the 18 member School Advisory Council that first grade buildings won t be ready before December 1st amid ongoing plans for five new masonry and tile schools. Ramsey Elected President and other officers named. The council outlined five study problems and will focus on the first three now. A public school budget hearing is set for Monday night in the primary school cafeteria.
Mrs. J. E. Bloodworth died at 1 40 a m Sunday when SH 350 wreck near Snyder ended her life. R Claire of Midland and aunt Mrs. J Thompson of Odessa suffered serious injuries while en route to Olney to collect Bloodworths children. Bloodworth and Claire both worked for Carl Ham Inc with Bloodworth transferred from Andrews six months earlier. Survivors include her husband two daughters her mother and sister.
Phillips Petroleum plans a 33 million cubic feet per day natural gas liquids extraction plant three and a half miles west of Andrews. The facility, fed by a regional gas gathering system with a remote booster in Northeast Andrews Magazine area, will serve multiple pools in the region and mark Phillips second such plant in Andrews county among eleven in West Texas and New Mexico.
The Andrews County Board of Equalization met all day Wednesday to settle fiscal year evaluation. A noon barbecue followed with county officials and oil company tax representatives. The 1956 evaluation is set at 55 million dollars with a tax rate of 1.55 dollars per hundred.
Andrews gears up for a Saturday celebration on June 18 featuring a fly-in breakfast parade barbecue and open-air show. Miss Progress Day queen Janie Dyer will reign with Jaycee support as local and regional participants prepare floats tours and a two-and-a-half hour open air show at the high school stadium.
In a busy week the Andrews School Board accepted resignations of two teachers Mrs Maxine Finch and Mrs Linda Lou Stalcup and hired four new teachers Miss Florence Ashcraft Donna Pace Miss Mary Helen Whitehead and I H Spikes. They also filled bus driver and custodian posts and bid on a 12 ton pickup. The board studied oil company tax issues and set a public budget hearing for Monday at 7 30 p m in the primary school cafeteria urging patrons to attend.
Andrews County gains a prolific extender in the Wemac field with Continental Oil No. 1 F. T. McCollum and Means flowing 3 798 barrels of 48 gravity oil from 13 260 to 13 306 feet after 1 000 gallons of acid. Cabot Nolley No 7 Bertha Nolley yields 220 barrels daily after fracturing. Evans No 1 Midland Farms and No 1 Gladys Cowden are slated for deep Wolfcamp drilling within Andrews County.
Piggly Wiggly holds first place after two wins and one loss as Corner Drug and the Bankers chase runnerup honors. The Roustabouts and Lindsey Roustabouts trail with Monday games keying the standings. Corner Drug beat the Roustabouts 8-3 with Johnson winning. Pigsty Wiggly edged the Bankers 7-6 as Stubbs won on the mound. Piggly Wiggly then routed Corner Drug 17-8 behind Stubbs pitching while the Bankers toppled the Roustabouts 8-7 with Frazier winning.
Funeral services for Michael M. Young, 85, former minister of the Andrews Church of Christ, were held at 10:30 A M Monday at the Church of Christ in Spur. He died Saturday in Spur hospital after a long illness and is interred beside his wife who preceded him in death. Mr. Young served with the local Church of Christ in 1944 and is survived by six sons.
Susan Elaine weighs 7 pounds 5.5 ounces born June 6 to J. E. Scroggins. Ruby Nell, 7 pounds 4 ounces, born June 4 to J. E. Brooks. Deborah Kay, 6 2, born June 1 to H. C. Carriker. Leslie Carl, 7 pounds 12.5 ounces, born June 1 to E. L. Hooper. Cherry Kay, 7 pounds 1.5 ounces, born May 26 to J. L. Beard. Myrna Gayie, 6 pounds 6.5 ounces, born May 26 to D. W. Spicer.
A strong dust front swept Andrews County on Wednesday afternoon with violent winds and a thunderstorm. The storm produced a 30 degree temperature drop and up to two tenths of an inch of moisture. Lightning struck the home of George Houston at 807 NE 4th, starting a small fire that was quickly extinguished by firefighters. the house is owned by Louis Harley.
F D Ferguson operates the new Andrews Drug in Andrews Arkansas with Virgil Reed owner of the store formerly Turner Drug. The remodeled shop opened last week and the prescription department should be ready around September 1st. The Fergusons have one son David. Mrs Ferguson’s parents are Mr and Mrs Hollis Parker of Andrews. Ferguson formerly worked in England Arkansas.
A sellout crowd watched the Jaycee American Legion sponsored wrestling in Andrews High Gym. Magnificent George McKay defeated Chief Little Eagle in the main event amid boos. In girls action Priscilla Gallegos vs Laura Martin ended with an unclear referee decision. Leon Kirilenko upset and later challenged Little Eagle. next Tuesday they collide. Jaycees and Legion plan outdoor venue if crowds stay large.
DeMolay installation ceremonies will be held at 7 30 p m at the Masonic Lodge with a Kermit DeMolay team presiding. Jerry Lasater to become master councilor succeeding Gerald Pilgrim, with Larry Robertson as senior councilor and Eddie Dumas as junior councilor.
C H Kimbrow division safety engineer Shell Oil Odessa will address the Andrews Desk and Derrick Club Monday at 8 00 p m at the Community building He will also show the film What Part Safety Plays in Production in the Oil Field Guests and the public are invited to attend.
Funeral services and burial for infant Lisa Gall daughter of Mr and Mrs Weldon Gregston were held Sunday in Midland. Lisa Gall was born May 29 and died Saturday at 5 30 p m in Midland Memorial Hospital.
J. B. Youngblood, president of the Andrew Rotary Club, returns from the International Rotary convention in Chicago. He reports a wonderful trip and inspirational meeting with Rotarians from 91 countries. Notable speakers included Pau Hoffman, former Marshall Plan administrator, Vice-President Richard Nixon, and Herb Shrin. Mrs. Youngblood visited her parents at Henderson during the absence.
