Big town celebrates anniversary with parade and plans

In Andrews a June 18 celebration marks decades of growth led by the chamber, Lions and Rotary clubs with a Jaycee parade and a fly in breakfast at the county airport. The event honors past milestones from 1939 to 1951, including courthouse dedication and highway completion.

Jaycees Receive National Charter Ceremony Honors New Odessa Sponsor

The Junior Chamber of Commerce was chartered Friday night at the Community building with Dixie Maltsberger installed as president. Rocky Ford, Texas Jaycees leader, presented the charter and delivered the address. Local officials Mayor Herb Brown Johnny Smith and Fort Stockton vice president Bill Moody spoke as officers were installed. Charter members numbered 31 with Odessans present and attendees from Midland Pecos and Fort Stockton.

Sign Up For School's New Summer Program

The school launches a summer recreation program with about 150 participants. Five athletic directors lead activities for girls and boys including indoor outdoor games swimming at the county pool. Boys meet 8:30 to 10:00 for sports instruction and swimming. golf class runs 8:30 daily with seven students. Warden plans a Jaycee Gold Tournament entry in Abilene later.

Motorcycle Fire at Anz Repair Shop Damage $300

Firemen extinguished a burning motorcycle at Anz Repair Shop 406 SW Ist. Owner Joe Knight was welding near the gasoline tank when sparks ignited the fire. He estimated $300 damage to the motorcycle.

Grissom Urges Lions to Go the Second Mile

Carl Grissom pastor of the First Baptist Church spoke at the Andrews Lions Club noon luncheon Tuesday urging members to “go the second mile.” He cited the sermon on the Mount and said extra effort yields better life, home happiness, and better dealings with others. Russell Austin was installed as Lions president and presided.

Postponed Softball Doubleheader Set for Saturday

Two rained out softball contests from May 9 have been rescheduled for Saturday night at the softball park. Fullerton Production will face Phillips and Texas will meet Magnolia in a doubleheader at the field.

Progress Party Day Set for Andrews County Opens Big Saturday

Officials and civic groups plan a county wide Progress Party on Saturday June 18 with formal openings for six firms and the new public buildings including an agricultural and youth center and a junior high school. A noon barbecue parade and a "Grand Old Opera" show at the high school stadium are on the schedule with regional leaders and Webb Air Force Base invited to participate.

Pro Wrestling Slated Tuesday In Andrews High Gym

The Jaycees and American Legion sponsor the first Tuesday wrestling night at the Andrews high school gym. Magnificent George McKay from Hollywood headlines the card against Dick Little Eagle with two out of three falls for the main event. Girl wrestlers Priscilla Gallegos and Laura Martin also appear in a separate two out of three falls bout.

Andrews County Opens Swimming Pool for Summer

The Andrews County Swimming Pool opened Thursday May 26 for the summer months with daily hours 1 30 p m to 6 p m and 7 p m to 9 p m Admission is 15 cents for children up to twelve and 25 cents for adults Mrs Frazier and children assist Coach Glen Frazier in operating the pool The wading pool stays open with same hours and no admission for children who must be accompanied by a parent when using it

Four Andrews County officers led by Judge Milton Ramsey travel to Rapid City for the International Parks Highway Association meeting with delegates from six midcontinent states and two foreign nations. Architects Begin On School Plans

Architects from Caudill Rowlett and Scott arrived in Bryan Texas to draft five temporary primary school buildings for first graders. Four sites are set with corners at Northwest J and 11th Northeast G and 5th Southwest 7th and B Southeast 3rd and Avenue C. The fifth location remains undecided.

Buggy But Happy Seniors Return from Trip

A group of 56 seniors and eight sponsors completed an annual trip traveling by three buses to Mayan Dude Ranch near Bandera Texas. They stopped in Ozona for meals faced by flies and dirty rooms with bugs at the ranch. They later toured San Antonio Breckenridge Park and remaining members shopped or explored the city before returning home.

First State Bank Opens In New Gonzales Building

Two new employees joined the staff as the First State Bank opened in a modern building at First and A. Jack L. Finch of Gonzales began duties as secretary to executive vice president J. O. Boothe after six years as chief deputy clerk in the Gonzales county courthouse. Mrs. Lulabell Van Duist became secretary to cashier Robert Barns, previously with Andrews Medical and Surgical Clinic. The bank plans its formal opening on Saturday June 18.
