drought relief rains cut city water use significantly. master-meter records show April through May consumption down from 1956 levels by about 10 million gallons as the population rose to 8,300. historical figures note June to August peaks, with 1956 setting records near 500 million gallons for the year.
Coach Charlies Russell announced the first game of the summer high school baseball program will begin Monday night in Denver City. The schedule includes Wink, Seminole, and Denver City games with other matches on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
A surge of drilling stakes in Andrews County includes No. 1 University Wolfcamp at 9 110 feet southeast of Andrews and 660 feet from section lines, multiple 12 mile outposts, and several 4 750 to 10 350 foot tests in Bakke Ellenburger and Embar fields. Operators include University Lands Woodley Petroleum Associated Oil Phillips Magnolia and Honolulu Oil with precise drillsite offsets.
Donovan R Davidson known as Brother Don arrived with his family Thursday to lead Means Memorial Methodist Church succeeding N S Daniel. Davidson a 29 year Methodist preacher and 22 year conference member has served as pastor at Levelland Hereford Idalou and Westover. He has held conference roles including director of Golden Cross and hospital and home board member. The family plans to engage community and youth programs as they settle into the growing church.
Jan Ellis leaves for Girls State in Austin June 10 to 19 under Delta Beta Sorority sponsorship. Two Andrews boys completed Boys State this week in Austin and return home. The sessions are sponsored by the State American Legion and Women’s Auxiliary to train juniors in government and leadership.
Carl Grissom pastor of the First Baptist Church will leave Monday to attend a meeting of the State Executive Board of the Texas Baptist General Convention. The board represents Baptists from across the state and meets four times yearly to handle state level business. The group will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church Dallas to review budgets and possible purchase of Memorial Hospital in San Angelo for a hospital for the age. A convention chairman is to be considered.
A summer recreation program opens at the youth center tomorrow with a full day of classes for families and youths. Registration precedes classes for youths, while adults may attend without registration. Notable activities include square dancing Mondays at 7 30 p.m. and a Monday tennis club at 7 30 p.m. at lighted courts. Kelton Brewer leads tennis, archery, and a boys sports program. Sandra Maberry and J Lee Smith assist. Vernon Johnsen directs adult volleyball and other sports. Lynn Harrison runs arts and crafts for children and women. See SUMMER Back Page.
Club officials announce a contest asking members to estimate season football ticket sales for the 1957 58 slate. Closest guess wins a $10 gift certificate. Entries should be mailed to Quarterback Club Box 656 city.
A nine year old girl on a three week visit to Andrews was harmed Friday night after being enticed from the Rose Theatre by a 14 year old blond youth who had lived in Andrews a week. A couple found her crying and took her to the sheriff’s office. The girl was examined at Permian General Hospital and a report filed.
Fourteen year old Huestie Brewer won the Junior Division of the Key City Club Golf Tournament in Odessa with rounds of 77 and 79. Terry Dill captured the Senior Division with a 73 as Mike Ford also competed in the junior field. Brewer received a trophy from the Odessa Downtown Kiwanis Club with other entrants noted.
Four boys in cars were arrested on the old gin road in southeast Andrews at 12 15 a m Friday after police heard the noise and halted the drag race. James N Hathcock was fined 82 00, Claiborn T Scogin 65 50, Merle Medley 82, and Edward D Thetford 84 for racing and excessive noise. Scogin and Medley paid fines. Hathcock and Thetford could not pay and were jailed.
The Permian General Hospital board approved a $19,000 Imperial GE diagnostic x-ray unit on a $500 monthly rental for up to two years. A radiology doctor will visit twice weekly to interpret images. The arc table moves 180 degrees and the seven foot table accommodates diverse patients as arrival is expected in 30 to 60 days.
Clayton Hunter, 32, of Donnell Drilling Company in Big Spring, had his arm severed at the elbow when a traveling block failed to stop while drilling six miles southeast of here. He was treated at Permian General Hospital then moved to Midland Memorial Hospital in good condition.
