Homeowners oppose a council approved oil drilling plan adjacent to their properties. The ordinance allows 144 lots to be drilled, promising low per-parcel royalties but risking property values. Residents vow continued action as city officials approve the permit amid protests.
Infant daughter of Mr CK Merritt of 309 PM Tuesday funeral services were held at First Church with officiating pastor. The child was born and died the same day. Parents are Joe Nelson and Mrs. C Vamesa Cole of Anson. Funeral arrangements under Andrews Funeral Home direction.
Strong backed burglars break into the Frankel City Post Office early Sunday taking a 550 pound safe and about $501 from the building. They dragged the safe to a field, pried off the lock, and mounted the money, stamps, and money order blanks. Recovered at the scene were $445.49 in checks. Blanchard reports little disturbed in the store.
The Highway 51 Association reports cooperation from the State Highway Commission to pursue a single route designation for the Mexico to Canada corridor. A letter of intent to redesignate the route as State Highway 851 was granted, aiming for cross state continuity with Texas and Colorado already on board. Oklahoma's hesitation to modify its short cross state segment remains a complication.
Families seeking help from the newly organized Goodfellow movement should contact Mrs. Forrest Noble or Mrs. A. C. Mize or Mrs. Ed Balkum if no one is in the courthouse basement room. Clothing stored in the courthouse basement is available to residents in need.
Youth Center offers a broad summer recreation program for 6 12 year old girls with kickball soccer dodge ball and indoor games. Miss Wanda Whitman leads the phase with 11 12 am sessions in the old high school gym and 2 4 pm sessions at the Youth Center.
A 15 year old boy received 12 months probation in county court after a Southeast by-pass confrontation over a girl led to a gunfight at a drive-in. The youth returned with a pistol and fired, injuring nothing fatal before police intervened and he was placed on probation with his parents.
A 309 mile four lane widening from Ave E in Southwest Andrews to 46th Street in Odessa was awarded to a Lubbock firm for 1 086 785 67. Henry L Stafford submitted the low bid and work should span about 240 working days with right of way and service road plans in Pecos and Andrews counties.
Officer Earl Cummins explains a common meter error. He says meters have a black dial indicating time left and a red indicator that can mislead drivers. He urges residents to rely on the black pointer to avoid expired meters and tickets.
Andrews Telephone Company distributed new light tan 1957 directories to subscribers this week. The volume increased from 1750 listings in 1956 and features long distance and emergency numbers on the first page. The Fire Department now has the number 3533 in this edition.
The five aldermen unanimous permit the Texas Company to drill a third city well despite protests from about 25 residents. The firm pledged compliance with the 1953 ordinance, offered surface compensation valued at 1953 prices, and argued the site near block 131 NW Andrews would boost future reservoir development and tax revenue. Residents warned of reduced home values and development restrictions near the proposed site.
Four local churches held vacation Bible schools with strong attendance. First Baptist plans 8 pm graduation at the main auditorium. Calvary and Second Baptist graduated 125 and 183 respectively, with plays and picnic and displays for parents. Upcoming sessions include Presbyterian in late June, First Christian in July, and Trinity Faith baptists in summer.
Andrews County Chapter of the American Cancer Society will hold its last meeting of the summer today at 7 30 p m in the county commissioners courtroom. Chapter president Neil Hayes urges all members to attend since this will be the final meeting until fall as most committees will be inactive.
Governor Price Daniel signed the bill from the 55th Legislature setting parents liable up to 300 dollars for property damage caused by their children. The measure takes effect Sept. 3 and targets vandalism and delinquency. It adds 100 dollar fines for teen driving violations and shifts minor license control to the Department of Public Safety.
