Levelland reports a September malaria push as 19 of every 1000 mosquitoes tested carry encephalitis germs. County officials launched a sweeping campaign to spray two fierce waves of mosquitoes and curb sickness. In Lenorah and the Plains area, residents confront drought and hog industry news while city officials consider fire and dispatch operations to improve emergency response.
Oil company tax representatives and the school board held a detailed review of the 1957 budget totaling 1 975 000 with emphasis on maintenance and operations. They urged trimming custodial and grounds costs while considering a tax rate between 1 61 and 1 70 with debt service fixed at 37 cents.
City Council discussed hiring a zoning engineer after a Chamber of Commerce civic improvements committee recommendation. The committee noted complaints and possible circulating petitions and urged prompt action to obtain licensed engineering services.
National Little League Foundation Day is honored tomorrow with a 6 p.m. ceremony at the Little League park. Officials including League President Herb Brown invite all to attend as Corner Drug faces Lindsey Rous tabouts and Piggly Wiggly plays the Bankers while participants, managers, coaches, and sponsors are introduced in a special program. Governor Price Daniel issued the proclamation designating June 14 as Foundation Day reflecting the world’s 4500 leagues and nearly one million youngsters involved in Little League Baseball.
The G. F. Wacker's 5c to $1.00 Store opens at North Main and NW Ave in a self service 9,000 square foot, air conditioned building. George McDaniel will manage with Wayne Weatherford as assistant, leading a staff of 15 local workers.
Reports of drenching rains and hail gave a dramatic picture but the county only recorded minor totals. About 22 inches in the city with light winds, 3 inches near Three Bar plant, traces at Frankel city, and 1 inch north of town in Florey. Lightning ignited a tank battery barrel 10 miles west.
The schoolboard adopted a new ticket policy for the upcoming grid stadium season with 1279 seats reserved in sections B and C along the east side. No prior season options will be honored for 1957, and sales run August 1 to August 31 with varying limits, prices, and reserved sections including Section D for student groups and general admission in Section A.
May totals show 277 traffic tickets issued by Andrews police. 31 jailed for May offenses and 156 confined this year. Fines collected include 1310 from meters with 655 to city. total May fines around 511.35. Dog returns were 2 reclaimed and 45 destroyed. one bicycle unrecovered. County reports 24 confined for offenses including drunkenness and rape investigations.
Officers for the Down town Lions Club were installed at a community park meeting on Monday night in a combined family and installation night. Lion Joe Young, Seminole school superintendent and club member, charged the new officers with their duties as awards were presented to several members.
