The recent rains brighten West Texas landscapes, prompting grass growth and park sod installation at the county park. The Andrews News reports on pool opening June 10, school notes, political campaigning, and returning college students, with reflections on community life and responsibilities of voters and candidates.
Mr and Mrs Rose Hellen welcomed a baby boy named Alex Marks on May 29 weighing six and a half pounds, the first gypsy birth at Andrews hospital. Mr and Mrs R V Kerr added a daughter on June 2 weighing five and three fourths pounds, with no name or number provided by the parents.
El Paso School of Mines President Dr D M Wiggins told Andrews High seniors that freedom without responsibility leads to anarchy and that security can destroy civilization. The district Lions convention in Fort Stockton featured speeches, musical numbers, a Governor election, and a humorous incident with the sheriff detaining a candidate.
The Andrews County swimming pool will open Thursday June 10 with dressing room stalls under construction. A purifying system will keep water pure and state health department requirements will be met under Coach Tubb supervision, offering healthful recreation for all.
J. S. Montgomery announced Jack McCarley would serve as Temporary Chairman in his absence as Montgomery leaves for a North Carolina vacation. The June 19 deadline for county candidates to file for the Primary ballot was noted and McCarley was named to receive filings for county and precinct races.
Funeral services were held at Singleton Funeral Home for Billie Bruce Brown infant son of Mr and Mrs L Z Brown who died Thursday May 27 at 1130 pm. He lived one day after being born May 26. Rev Eugene Brand of First Baptist Andrews officiated and the body was interred in Andrews Cemetery.
The janitors of the Andrews Public Schools and building custodian M. O. Woolam attended a short course for janitors and custodians at Carlsbad Thursday and Friday. Attending janitors included R. S. Dillard Bill Jones M. H. Brewer and W. C. Peeples.
Another good rain drenched portions of Andrews County on Tuesday with the city of Andrews receiving the season's best moisture. Rain extended about thirteen miles south of Andrews while McCarley settlement reports roughly seven inches in the last two weeks. North central Andrews saw the least moisture, and rainfall Tuesday barely advanced north of the city.
Knox Irwin, a Hughes Tool Co employee, resigns effective June 1 to devote himself to his candidacy for County and District Clerk. A native of Andrews County, he is a World War II veteran who served with the 112th Cavalry in the Southwest Pacific theatre.
Pecos sheriff and Reeves County tax assessor collector Buck Jackson announced his bid for State Representative in the 88th district. A veteran public official and rancher, he vows to campaign personally and seeks West Texas support, saying he is backed by no group. Jackson has served on the Reeves County School Board and as County Commissioner and is active in local organizations.
All boys and girls interested in the Summer Play Program should meet in the High School Auditorium Monday June 7 at ten o clock. The program sponsored by the school will include supervised games with Miss Oakley in charge of the girls and coaches supervising the boys.
Harry Robertson, son of Mr and Mrs Robbie Robertson, leaves for Nashville to represent Howe Publishing Company during the summer season.
The Corner Drug, closed for two weeks, reopens under new ownership K B Whitaker and T D Sneed of Stanton Texas. J K Easterling and wife Mrs Easterling take over management bringing 27 years in the drug business and 20 years as a licensed beautician. Public invited to visit for acquaintance.

Mr and Mrs Bill Lovett of Peankel City were shaken and bruised when a drunken driver rear ended their car on Saturday May 29. The other motorist was jailed in Ector County for driving while intoxicated.
Marketing news notes Huckabee, buyer for the Fashion mee, departed early this week for Langeles and Hollywood to secure inventory for her Andrews store.
Mrs Hal Lonis who has been ill for some time was carried to Oklahoma City Tuesday by her husband for treatment. Accompanying them were Miss Fannie Mathews a sister her foster daughter Gene Nix and Mrs Archie Lonis Reports state that she stood the trip and was doing as well as expected. Mrs Dudley Jones also was come to Oklahoma for treatment having left here Wednesday accompanied by Earl Jones a son and Mrs Bill Jones.
J. A. Ulmer announced Tuesday that pipe for the City of Andrews sewerage system is being placed on the ground and that work has already started on the disposal plant.
Mrs Marshall Allison returned from a visit with her sister Mrs W T Fuller in Colorado City, sharing news of the trip and family time.
W R Smith minister and Abilene Christian College official delivered the baccalaureate to the senior class, blaming parental laxity for youth troubles and urging discipline. The service featured piano by Mrs. W H Griffin, invocation by Rev. Eugene Brand, scripture by M O Woolam, chorus direction by Miss Elizabeth Meachum, and benediction by F E Brumley.
The post office will start Sunday mail service in Andrews effective June 1 with Mrs. Edgar Burkett as postmistress. Mail arrives at 9 a.m. and departs between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. Sundays and holidays are included. Outgoing mail must be at the local post office by 9 a.m. A Midland pickup route serves Andrews. star-route patrons lose Sunday and holiday service.
Andrews county Commissioners Court met with tax engineers and oil company representatives. Means Memorial Methodist Church begins Vacation Church School for children ages 4 to 15, with sessions from Friday morning June 4 through June 11.
The Andrews Home Demonstration Clubs will sponsor a 42 and Bingo party Friday June 11 at 8 pm in the new American Legion Hall. Tickets 50 cents per couple, on sale by clubwomen and at the door. Proceeds fund council expenses. prizes and refreshments provided. Local merchants are asked to contribute prizes. Visitors: Mr and Mrs Jack Little of Hobbs visited T D Hamilton Sunday.
In Central Southwest Andrews County a Fuhrman Petroleum No. 1 E C Nix wildcat begins drilling into the Lower Permian Fullerton Bay section about 12 miles southwest of Andrews. The well targets 7,370 to 7,425 feet while cementing back to cut water and evaluate pay potential.
