The Andrews county community reflects on rain aiding recovery as schools prepare for end of term events. The column notes weddings graduates and local housing needs while urging voters to seek integrity in candidates and outlining Odessa and Andrews growth projections ahead of 1958.
Superintendent Thos. D. Hamilton announced the closing activities for the year with a Baccalaureate sermon by W. R. Smith and a Commencement address by Dr. D. M. Wiggins. Diplomas for Junior High will be presented, and Senior High exercises will feature Dr. Wiggins, president of the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy.
Rev and Mrs Eugene Brand came back Tuesday from the Southern Baptist Convention in Memphis Tennessee. Rev Brand's father and mother accompanied them.
Mr and Mrs A R Willis welcomed a baby boy on Wednesday May 26 weighing 7 pounds 9 ounces. Mr and Mrs L J Brown also welcomed a baby boy on Wednesday May 26 weighing 5 pounds 4 ounces.
Murray J. Howze announces candidacy for District Attorney of the 109th Judicial District of Texas. He campaigns on a clean, issue driven platform, pledges impartial justice, and aims to meet voters district wide while pledging independence from special interests.
Mrs Elizabeth Roberts and her daughter Carroll traveled by plane to Memphis Tennessee to visit her sister Margarett Travis who will graduate from St Joseph Hospital of that city.
A heavy rain event spanned Andrews County and the South Plains from Monday night through Wednesday, bringing over an inch in many areas and up to two inches on some gauges. Heavy showers reported in Fullerton and Ralph McWhorter areas, with hail near Humble Camp and damage from large hail in Ector County. One traffic accident occurred from slick roads. injuries minor.
The Amens Lions Club installed new officers and directors for the ensuing year in a ceremony led by Governor M. O. Woolam. The event, held at the Coca Nougher residence, featured a barbecue by Roy Cocanougher and Knox Irwin and was shortened due to rain. Officers include J. Lee Smith President and Charles M. Havens Secretary. Directors named were O. G. Weatherby, L. D. Hargrove, and Russell Johnsen.
Funeral services for Lt. Floyd B. Carpenter of the 3rd Air Force will be held May 29 in Lubbock with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A Broadway To The Big Bend Highway Association meeting is set for June 5 in Post to push road completion from the Andrews-Dawson line to Garza line. A Lawson County bond election for the road is scheduled, with a Dawson County election on June 15, as Garza County citizens are urged to join the project. the association reports over 80 miles secured and 40 more to finish, with paving already from Prisideo to Pecos and Quanah to Paducah.
Funeral services with military rites were held in Tahoka on May 26 for Arnold Jackson Warren who died in Normandy on July 26 1944. The VFW posts of Lubbock Tahoka and O'Donnell led the service with cousins as pallbearers. Survivors include his parents four brothers and two sisters. Relatives from Andrews attended.
Cliff Leak leads a group building a Drive In cafe at the traffic light junction of Highways 51 and Ranch Highway 87 in the town center. Leek, former operator of Hearne Motor Freight in Andrews, will manage the new establishment.
Mr and Mrs H M Oswalt will depart Friday for Dallas where Mr Oswalt plans a consultation with Dr D Enrico a noted specialist.

Funeral services for John W. Richards 71 pioneer ranchman and merchant were held at the First Methodist Church in Stanton Texas with Rev Loyd Mayhew officiating. He died of a heart attack at his Andrews home after a 71 day drilling assignment. Survived by his wife Floy Richards two daughters and several relatives. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.
State Highway Engineers finish the survey of the Dollarhide road in southwestern Andrews county and will submit plans to the District Office at Lubbock and the head office at Austin for approval. When approved, bids will be requested for construction of this important oil field highway. Plans on the Mabee road are in private engineers’ hands.

F O Roberts, 47, stocker company employee, was found dead in bed Tuesday morning by W A Mitchell. Heart attack suspected. Funeral set for Thursday May 27 in Vance Texas, with body taken by Singleton ambulance. Survived by three brothers S W Uvalde Elmo Camp Wood and Amy Uvalde. three sisters Maudie Caldwell Alpine Jessie Bell O Bryant Comstock and Cleo Anderson Pharr. parents Mr and Mrs Jess Roberts and daughter Norma Bobbitt, all of Grape land.
A new softball field just north of the County Park is nearly complete and expected to be ready by June 3. Workmen are installing lighting and leveling the grounds to permit early play, authorities announced this week.
The City Equalization Board led by L. D. Hargrove, Bill Walker and Joe Underwood raised the 1948 taxable values to 1,496,358 from 1,412,748 in 1947, an increase of 85,610. Mary Terry of Kilgore, Texas visits her daughter Mrs. Joe Sisk.
An effort to extend Devonian production from the Shafter Lake field begins with Cities Service No 1 Y University drilling to 10 300 feet about 1 25 miles north of Andrews. Fisher No 1 tests Devonian pay after re acidizing with 8000 gallons of acid. Other Deep tests by Sinclair Prairie Gulf Oil and Stanolind near Andrews show mixed results as prospects target Devonian yields.
