A veteran recalls a bitter yet joyous Christmas in 1944 near Rome. The unit endured wind and cold, shared a fruit cake and cookies, and welcomed a fresh platoon into their foxhole as snow fell. Little Tex's snuff shortage adds a touch of humor to a stark memory.
Four new Chamber of Commerce directors were elected to the board to serve three years. Outgoing include Fred Courtney Bill Hart Kenneth Bales and Jimmy Ulmer. The next board meeting on January 4 will elect officers and adopt the 1966 program.
After a first loss the Mustangs beat Pecos 87 to 49 to take third place and a trophy at Ft Stockton. Fort Stockton topped Del Rio in the finals, while Del Rio eliminated Andrews 66 to 59 on Saturday. Bobby Smith led Andrews with 21 points in the Pecos game.
An Andrews girl, Sherry Horton of 603 Rice Drive, won a puppy in a contest by the Odessa College journalism department. Other winners include Raymond Tiller Odessa Terry Minter Midland Terri Shephard Odessa and Michael Spurlock Kermit for dogs while Linda Hennessey Odessa Nena Webb Odessa Ann Wade Midland Debra Sharlene Brooks Andrews won a Persian kitten but Debra Brooks could not be located.
The News announces a combined Christmas greeting edition with the Sunday paper. There will be no paper on December 26 so staff can spend Christmas with their families. The next edition will publish on Thursday, December 36.
Tire thieves swept through West Texas oil fields from Lamesa to Kermit Tuesday night. Sheriff’s deputies followed up Wednesday on two thefts in Andrews County, reporting four tires and wheels at the W. T. Battery No 1 Gulf lease and four tires and wheels at Pan American’s J. E. Parker Well No. 5 lease. Photographs show tires possibly mounted on a truck in the Lamesa area as investigation continues.
The courthouse City Hall and banks will close on Christmas Eve with the courthouse closing Thursday and Friday and banks ending operations on December 24. City Hall schedules a partial closure with Friday reduced hours while both banks announce a December 24 close and a separate December 31 stay open.
Two people were injured in in town wrecks during December. Mrs Beatrice Gaines was hospitalized at Permian General with bruises and shock. Robert Lattimer 16 of 611 E Broadway treated in the emergency room. Ronny Kuykendall 16 of 1312 Terrace Circle collided with the Gaines pickup at SW First and SW Ave. Lattimer was a passenger in Kuykendall car. Kuykendall cited for no operator license stop sign and excessive speed. Weldon Monroe of the City Police investigated. On Monday a second crash occurred at NW 3rd and NW Ave involving Janice Withers Redding 600 NW 10th and a panel truck at Petty Geophysical. See WRECK Page 8.
Five fires broke out in Andrews over four days with three in oilfields. A Cooper Paint Store storeroom blaze at 6 05 p m injured two volunteer firefighters Opal Nix cut an artery in his foot and Blackie Smyers suffered a head cut. Other fires occurred on the Funice Highway Ralph Lowe Lease Teneco Burma Road Humble Walker lease and at the Wagon Wheel cafe.
