Luther Reynolds, superintendent of Stanolind Oil and Gas production here, was elected president of the chamber of commerce at a board meeting Monday. James Roberts was chosen vice president, Vernon Payne secretary, with four new directors joining to fill vacancies. The 12‑man board includes Lynn Rice, Charlie Carruth, Roy Kennett, L. B. Williams, Al. Rhodes, Ray Porter and J. R. Bills. New officers begin January 20 at the annual banquet.

United Fund Goal Reached in Andrews County Drive

The 1955 Andrews County United Fund announced a total goal of 12161.75 was met at a Tuesday meeting. Directors approved distributing quotas to seven participating agencies and planned outreach to ten Texas towns similar to Andrews to study fund drives. They left next year’s Youth Center inclusion to incoming officers.

Second Wallace drive-in project begins in Andrews

Construction on a 650 car drive-in theatre for Wallace Theatres started this week in Andrews. Tom Griffing construction of Abilene will add to the two Wallace theatres and existing drive-in. Ground has been cleared north of the east west butane route, with work to resume after the holidays and finish by April.

Prison Inmate To Be Brought Here For Trial

An Oklahoma state penitentiary inmate will be returned here next week to face check swindling charges. Deputy Sheriff Ray Phillips with a bench warrant left for McAlester to capture A. D. Huckabee, who finishes his sentence tomorrow. Huckabee will be handed over to Phillips to stand trial in Andrews.

Youth Folk Dance Clinic Scheduled Here Tuesday

The Youth Center closes for Christmas but reopens Tuesday for a three day Folk and Square Dance Clinic led by Leon Guffin from Austin. Sessions run 9 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm with a Mexican Party Tuesday night and a Grand Finale Thursday. A $1 fee covers instruction and parties.

Third Hat Entered Sheriff Race In Andrews County

Chester Etter, a county resident for 22 years and longtime cowboy and oil field worker, announced his candidacy for sheriff of Andrews county. Born in Oklahoma, he moved to Texas at age three and has worked with diverse groups. married, he belongs to the First Baptist church, an Odd Fellow and a Mason. He has been employed by the county since 1950 and vows to administer duties impartially.

Merchants Observe Monday Holidays In Andrews

The chamber of commerce says December 26 and January 2 are official holidays. Most retail and wholesale firms in Andrews will close on those two days.

Senior High Building Now Debt Free

The senior high school facility including a gym and auditorium is debt free after the last bond was paid this week. Bonds were issued in 1945 with completion in 1947 and were bought by the First State Bank at 114 cent interest. M O Woolam, business manager, announced the payoff.

Lubbock Firm Is Low Bidder For Andrews County Courthouse

The BMFP Construction Company of Lubbock submitted the low bid of 240 701 on the Andrews courthouse addition after options were trimmed. Several contracts were adjusted to reduce costs with bids from C D Electric Big Spring and Neill s and Company Midland among others. County Judge Milton Ramsey noted price increases mainly in steel but said essentials were not cut. completion is planned in 380 days.

Supper Raises Funds for Andrews Youth Center

Funds totaling 454.50 were raised at a chili supper in the primary cafe in conjunction with the opening night of a basketball tournament. Over 500 people were served with chili, slaw, crackers, beans, pies and coffee. Proceeds go to furnishing the new youth center, with donations from Wolf Brand, Sunshine Crackers, Piggly Wiggly, Nix Cafe and others. Leaders from local clubs coordinated the event and a large volunteer group worked three hours.

Teen Agers Charged With Burglary

Three teenage youths from Dallas were arrested here Sunday night and charged with burglary and theft at Smith's City Drug store after breaking into the warehouse and stealing a complete set of luggage. Two are sixteen and one is fifteen. Luggage was recovered from a motel room after questioning.
