The Andrews County school census begins January 2 conducted by census takers across the county. It covers children born between September 1 1938 and September 1 1950 and also counts birth through 17 for planning. Officials seek preschool data to project needs four or five years ahead and anticipate potential extra buildings if growth continues.
The Texas Company reports discovery from Fusselman in No. 1 BC State wildcat 17 miles southwest of Andrews. After drilling to 9 075 feet and testing, the well flowed 18 barrels of lead oil and 76 barrels of new oil on a 16 hour test, then 12 barrels on a later 14 hour test. Delhi Taylor No.1 Fasken offset in Southeast Andrews County completed from Ellenburger with 24 hour flow potential of 283.4 barrels.

Rebeca Ann born December 18 to Mr. and Mrs Milton Dee Avery. a seven pound son born December 20 to Mr. and Mrs T G Stanley. Helena Marie born December 19 to Mr. and Mrs John C Miller.
The Andrews Mustangs resume the basketball wars Tuesday night against the Seminole Indians, defending state AA champions, on Seminole’s home court. Vernon Johnson’s squad faces a strong foe after the Indians’ recent tournament success. Crane comes to town Friday for the second conference game.
Capital stock of the First State Bank was raised from 75000 to 125000 at a stockholders meeting. Surplus rose from 75000 to 125000 with 50000 added to undivided profits. Bank plans higher local loan limits amid record growth. Loans and discounts and deposits figures from October and April reports are cited.
Andrews merchants observe January 2 as an official holiday recognized by the chamber mercantile committee. Harry Cowan, manager, stated most retail and wholesale firms will observe the holiday.
Twenty seven youths finished a three day folk and square dance clinic at the Youth Center coached by Leon McGuffin of Austin. A grand finale and a Mexican Christmas party closed the event with Laverne Husser and Ja Faye Alexander featured in a Machete dance. The center plans a New Years Eve format dance with Sim Galloway and his band and resumes regular schedules next week for senior and junior high students.
Unofficial figures for the past year show 25 deaths in Andrews county with 14 killed in violent events. Of 17 adults and 8 infants who died, eight adults died of heart attacks and two of cancer. Nine of the 14 violent deaths were highway crashes, four oil field accidents, one plane crash. Last year 12 killed in accidents and 19 died from natural causes.
Carl Betenbouch owner of the local phone company said most homes and businesses now have dial telephones but a few have been overlooked. He urged those with old phones to call the office with name and address so the service department can install dial phones immediately as the company plans a January switch over.
