A 20 voice choir from Means Memorial Methodist Church will sing the Christmas Cantata Chimes of the Holy Night Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in the church auditorium. Directed by Miss Dorothy Post and Mrs. Pat McNair, soloists include Miss June Whitcomb and Mrs. Guy McGill. duets by Mrs. Russell Johnson and Mrs. Paul Jones. Rev Van Zandt urged public attendance.
Calvin Farris hit a final ten second field goal to lift Brownfield over Andrews 33-31 after a tight back and forth game. T. D. Hamilton led Andrews with 18 points while Glenn Corby scored 17 for Brownfield. In the B game Andrews won 26-23 as Smith led with 10 points. Mustangs travel to Sundown Friday and to Lubbock Saturday to face the Westerners.
Twin brothers Harold and Carol Dollar from Seminole were slightly injured when their 1942 coupe overturned about three miles south of town on State Highway 51. They were treated at Andrews hospital after being pinned under the car briefly when it swerved off the road and hit a soft shoulder.
The Andrews Study Club hosted its annual Christmas gathering on Tuesday December 14 at 8 p m in Mrs. Carl Sealy’s home. Hostesses were Mrs J W Pinnell R R Ramsey and B F Seay. Children from Mrs Bernice Boze’s fifth grade sang carols and presented a one act play.
Justice and county court records show no complaints filed for hunting law violations in the county. A five year closed season on quail ended this season and hunters report quail plentiful.
Monahans Lobos clash with New London Wildcats at Brownwood High Stadium at 2 p m Saturday to decide who faces the New Braunfels Falfurrias winner for the state Conference A title. Key backs Waldo Young and Connie McGourick spark the attack as fans trek to the game.
Work begun on a Fullerton Church of Christ building to be ready for occupancy in January. Sponsored by Churches of Christ in Andrews Seminole Eunice and Hobbs with large contributions to the building fund. Members now meet in Andrews and Seminole and plan to hire a full time minister once complete.
A shower honored Miss Wanda Cox bride elect of Leo Barnes on Wednesday December 8 from 3 to 4 30 p m at the home of Mrs Kenneth Thompson with about 50 guests. Gifts totaled many, and the couple plans to marry December 24 in Andrews.
Mrs Reeves received birthday coffee at Mrs Fred Stephenson's Magnolia Pipeline camp. The Magnolia party featured Christmas decorations and guests including Reeves Stephenson Moore Jeffrey Black Waites Morrison Jones from Kilgore. Several locals and visitors from Oklahoma Texas and New Mexico joined church, school and civic activities around holiday gatherings.
Voters in the Andrews Independent School District go to the polls at the courthouse Saturday to decide if the board may issue 275000 in bonds to enlarge the primary school, build a stadium and field house, and acquire more property. Enrollment boosts and county development cited as reasons.
Mrs May Pope aged 60 of Seminole died after the automobile she rode in overturned on the Seminole Andrews highway in heavy rain. Five others, including Mrs Nora Riddle and a five year old boy from Seminole, were treated for bruises and shock at Tomb hospital. The driver said brake failure caused the vehicle to veer and overturn.
Bonus bids on leases of 32 653 acres of University land totalled 2 959 500 here Friday. Reagan county tracts produced most of the total with bids including 305 000 on 220 acres and 205 000 on 160 acres. Proceeds go to the permanent fund for higher education. About 43 thousand acres were offered across Andrews Martin Crane Crockett Upton Reagan Pecos Hudspeth and Ward counties.
Rev J D Smith of Modesto California preached during a three week revival at the Assembly of God Church drawing record crowds and conversions. Rev Quillin said attendance at Sunday School surpassed all previous figures and an all day service with lunch will close the revival on December 19 with ministers from regional churches expected to attend.
Reverend A G Abbott state evangelist for Texas Christian Missionary Society works in Andrews to organize the First Christian Church. A committee chose a site for the new building and regular services begin with Sunday activities including a 3:00 p.m. service and 2:15 p.m. Sunday school at the Methodist Church auditorium.
The First Christian Church invites all to a Christmas party at the home of Mr and Mrs Roland Tilly on Saturday December 18 at 7 30 p m Gifts for orphans are requested and a food gift box will be in the Methodist Church vestibule Sunday morning December 19 for needy Andrews families This season emphasizes giving to the less fortunate.
Coach Francis Tubb announced December 6 1948 that Andrews Mustangs football players lettered in 1948. The list includes Bob Holman Wayne Graham Joe Weatherby Enoch Reid John Corley Max Short Sonny Helvey Robert Forbes Allen Humphreys Billy Phillips T D Hamilton Bob Summerwell Carl Hughen Jack Bruton Joe Dillard Melvin Cotton Neill Longley Johnny Walker with each player’s year and cited best game of the year.
The school calendar features multiple events including a Thursday second grade mothers party from 1 30 to 2 30 pm and a Friday party for first grade mothers from 2 00 to 3 00. Monday night piano recital and Tuesday night Christmas programs for high school and junior high will follow with Sunday afternoon Mrs J W Moore’s recital in the elementary auditorium.
The Andrews Volunteer Fire Department answered three calls this past week. They were summoned Sunday night to extinguish a bath house fire at Mrs. Jack Kelly's home in south Andrews. Firefighters were later called back when the blaze rekindled. They also responded to a third call on the Are de Louis Lease.
The new grade school cafeteria, opened November 30, seats 200 and serves 250 to 325 daily. Manager Mrs. Claria Jordan leads Copal Lowther Lillian Bennett Almeta Phillips Lois Pilgrim Ed Spears Joe Stewart. Menu includes two vegetables salad meat dessert milk and juices on some days at 25 cents for grades up to four and 35 cents for higher grades.
Mrs J W Moore presents piano pupils in a Sunday recital at 4 pm in the elementary school auditorium. A Christmas tree will be set up and Santa Claus will give gifts fruit and candy to listed students including Skippy Spear Allen Brown Jane Maxwell Sue Max well Peggy Thrower and others. Public invited.

While fishing in the Concho last week Dave Sisson hooked a 175 pounder and landed him only to find the big fish was himself. He snagged his thumb and required hospital treatment at Angelo, where surgery freed the hook. Dave then visited his grandson born three weeks ago weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces, now 10 pounds 10 ounces.
Miss Joyce Stewart daughter of Mr and Mrs Kelly Stewart of Fullerton Texas married James E Foster in the First Methodist Church parsonage Odessa on Saturday December 11 Reverend Jameson officiated The bride a Nacona High School graduate and NTSTC student works as a bookkeeper at Andrews County Hospital The groom son of Mrs Zula Tipton is a Nacona High School graduate employed by Olsen Drilling Company They will reside in Andrews after a short wedding trip
A series of birth notices list newborns born to families including the Cross Osborne Brooks Mitchell with December birthdates. Willie Samuel born December 12, Dora Jean born December 12, Lyndell Wade born December 13, and Lynda Kay born December 14.
The Andrews Post Office is the town’s busiest spot with staff kept busy from open to close during the holiday rush. Postmistress Mrs. Burkett said all hands will work nights next week to handle the mail volume. The lobby is crowded during peak times as thousands of stamps and cards move through.
Lake Oil & Gas announces No. 1-B Hayden Miles in Glorieta four miles west of Andrews shows commercial oil with initial pumping around 15 barrels per hour consisting of 75 percent new oil and 25 percent mud and water. Prospects for 200 to 250 barrels daily if water show is exhausted after extended pumping. Nearby wildcat No. 1 Munger & Nix planned at 5,000 feet depth, 13 miles west of Andrews. Champlin completes No. 1 F University with initial 80 barrels daily.
Officials warn that a surge of moving activity between now and the start of the year will push postal facilities to their limits and potentially affect mail service. Communities brace for longer delays and redistribution efforts.
The Andrews Quarterback Club held a banquet in the new elementary school cafeteria to honor the Andrews Mustangs football team. Coach Frances Tubb led reflections on the 1948 season and anticipated a stronger squad next year. Supt. Hamilton praised the team’s performance and urged support for a bond issue. A film of the Andrews-Seminole game was shown, and a list of honored players and coaches was announced.
