Construction began this week on a drive in theatre for Andrews J L Slaughter owner operator of the Yellowjacket Drive In in Kermit He purchased 900 feet on the east side of the Seminole Highway just north of the Stonewall Jackson Pontiac building The 100 foot screen will face east and the concession stand will face west Slaughter uses the Te Lewis booking agency Dallas stated his partner would run the Kermit theatre and he and his family would move here to operate the new drive in
Local cotton growers face a Tuesday December 13 referendum to decide if marketing quotas will apply to the 1956 cotton crop. Elliser Tom Jr explains quotas take effect only with a two thirds yes vote, with penalties for excess cotton and full price supports for compliant growers. If disapproved, no quotas but supports at 50 percent of parity.
The Andrews High School band earned a first division rating in the Class AAA division at the Odessa Resion VIII Interscholastic League marching contest. Drum major Carl Powea led the group, with twirlers Carolyn Morrison Carolyn Clinton and Jan Ellis earning first and second division honors respectively. Judges praised precision tempo and showmanship though noted slight errors from scattered players and brass overblowing.
Santa Claus will make a second visit to Andrews next Thursday to talk with children and distribute candy. He will meet lower grade students at the school Thursday morning and then appear at the courthouse at noon to greet preschoolers with parents before departing at 2 30 in the afternoon due to a tight schedule.
The Andrews Study Club leads a Wolf Brand chili supper to fund furniture for the youth center. Lions Rotarians Jaycees and other groups join in as 1000 guests expected for 5 to 9 pm at the primary cafeteria on the first night of the Andrews Invitational Basketball Tournament. Proceeds fund youth center furnishing. Corporate and local sponsors provide chili beans crackers coffee and service by students and volunteers.
Members of the DeMolays were notified that the Christmas trees cannot be shipped. Larry Robertson, head of the group, said refunds would be given to depositors.
Centex Paving Company employee John Thurman Bigsey, 44, suffered severe head injuries when a cable struck him at the West Texas Concrete mixing plant in West Andrews. He received emergency surgery in Permian General Hospital before transport to Fort Worth for plastic surgery. His condition remained critical yesterday morning.
Floyd Peacock, longtime sheriff of Andrews County, announced his candidacy for the separate office of county tax assessor and collector. He noted the split from the sheriff and tax assessor roles becomes official January 1, 1957 and pledged to seek voter support before the July primaries.
Parcel post packages will be picked up at the rear door of the Burkett building starting Monday morning. Mrs M Burkett, postmistress, said the move speeds delivery of Christmas packages and runs until December 27. Outgoing mail remains at the post office window.
Final rites were held for Luther Jack Walker 47 of Odessa at Northside Baptist Church. The D K Drilling roughneck died in Permian General Hospital from oilfield injuries suffered November 26 when struck by drill pipe on a rig 12 miles south of Andrews. Rev A B Truesdell officiated burial was in Lone Wolf Cemetery near Lorain. He is survived by his widow two daughters his mother three sisters and six brothers.
A correction states that Jimmy Lowther was not elected vice president of the Ex-Students Association. The proper officer elected is Byron Greaves who becomes the new vice president. Jimmy Lowther is a senior this fall.
Funeral services were held in Seminole for Cecil Bingham 25 victim of a highway accident Tuesday night. He died at Permian General Hospital from head injuries suffered when his late model car ran off the Big Spring highway about 25 miles east of Andrews. He was thrown from the car and found 50 feet away. The car was a total loss. He was buried in Seminole.
Andrews Mustang varsity heads to Snyder invitational aiming for first win after losses to Odessa and Levelland. They open against Midland while coach Vernon Johnson pushes for breakthrough. B team travels with Ponies to Stanton facing Coahoma in first game as part of a three day event with multiple West Texas teams.
Larry Kelly and ten youth performers from Amarillo will headline the Andrews Quarterback Club annual football banquet in the primary cafeteria at 8 p.m. tomorrow. Supt. T A Roach and coaches Glenna Frazier and Max Goldsmith will speak.
John Suggs, longtime chief deputy sheriff in Andrews County, announced his candidacy for sheriff in the July Democratic primaries. He notes the office split from tax assessor-collector takes effect January 1, 1957, and plans an active campaign starting January. Suggs, a 38-year resident, says his 12 years in law enforcement and district court duties qualify him to fill the vacancy left by Sheriff Floyd Peacock. He is married with four daughters and seeks broad local support.
A list of December activities includes a quarterback banquet, Mustang games at Level Land on Dec 12 for grades seven to nine in Lamesa, piano recitals by Ashcraft on Dec 13, Anthony Store event on Dec 14, Grissom piano recital, a Wolf Chit Supper, Coaches Banquet, Legion Xmas party with Santa arrival, and a 2nd day tournament with safety and plant parties at Phillips Plant and Magnolia HD.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce closes plans for a city wide Christmas aid drive. Central drop point is the county library with donors from DeMolays Rainbows Lions and local clubs contributing gifts and goods for families in need. Wallace Theatres offer a free movie December 17 for those bringing in items.
John D. Hunter spoke at the Andrews Lions Club lunch about highway safety using a 1000 mile imaginary highway. He warned that bodies and injuries line the road to symbolize deaths and wrecks caused by speed, wrong driving, and reckless behavior, urging restraint.
