Eight men receive 72 year total in district court sentences

The district court handed down a total of 72 years in prison to eight men this week. Richard James Van Arsdale and Russell Leonard Bankston were each given five year terms after burglary convictions. Others faced sentences ranging from four to seven years for forging, burglary, or related crimes.

Mustangs and Lobos Set for Tuesday Clash

The Andrews Mustangs face the Levelland Lobos Tuesday in the second game of the season under coach Vernon Johnson. The Mustangs opened with a 20 to 65 defeat to Odessa Bronchos and released a two tournament schedule listing Snyder and Andrews events along with a compact conference slate beginning January 3.

Services Held For Bob McAfee Here Thursday

Funeral services for Robert A. McAfee 58 were at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Carl Grissom officiating. He died Tuesday in Yoakum County Hospital Denver City after a heart attack while loading cattle en route home. Born July 10 1897 in Bell County he lived in Andrews 28 years. Burial in Andrews County Cemetery under Singleton's Funeral Home. Survived by wife Fannie six sons Roy L A D Odessa John A Ada Oklahoma Jessie B Carlsbad NM and four daughters Lou Morgan Lola Allison Floreine Glenn and Katie Eggleston one sister Maude Calhoun 21 grandchildren pallbearers listed.

Preliminary Draft Of City Charter Finished By Group

A 15 member charter commission completed a preliminary draft of Andrews city charter at a regular Tuesday night meeting. Charter chairman A L Rhodes announced the draft after six months of bi monthly study of other cities charters. Next meeting will start a detailed paragraph by paragraph review to iron out wrinkles.

Oswalt Case Moved to El Paso District Court

The Mildred Oswalt case, former city bookkeeper, was transferred to the 34th District Court in El Paso Texas after an agreement between District Attorney John Lee and defense counsel John Watts. Judge G C Olsen granted the venue change overcoming Watts motion to dismiss alleging a material grand jury witness. An earlier trial ended in a hung jury.

First Baptist Church Holds Inaugural Service in New Auditorium

The First Baptist Church hosts its first worship service in the new red brick building. Reverend Carl Grissom preaches at morning service while former pastor Everett Martin speaks at the evening service. The $100,000, 14 000 square foot hall features nurseries, offices, refrigerated air, PA system, hearing aids, carpeting, a Baldwin grand piano, organ speakers, choir seating for 45, choir robes, and a Sunday school goal of 800 for opening day.

Retail Stores to Stay Open Late on Thursdays

Andrews merchants extend Thursday hours until nine o clock by order of the chamber of commerce. The mercy mercantile committee says late closing aids workers finishing after six PM. The plan runs until December 15 with many stores opening nine every night thereafter.

Operator reports dual completion at Floyd Ard Jr No 1 J Eank o Underwood inside Andrews city limits. First producer within city lines. Wells show 24 hour oil output of 233 barrels at 9 200 feet with 38 4 gravity oil and gas oil ratio 650 1. Wolfcamp flow yields 196 barrels 37 gravity oil with gas oil ratio 435 1. Texas Company No 1 BD State wildcat 17 miles southwest of Andrews finds gas oil and sulphur water on a three hour DST at 7 550 7 637 feet with 3000 feet free gas and 125 feet oil. Project extends to 9 700 feet testing Elien burger. Field locations include University Lands survey and Three Bar Devonian area.

Quarterbackers Plan Grid Banquet On Dec 10

Tickets went on sale for the annual Quarterback Banquet honoring members of the A and B football teams and coaches. The event, December 10 in the primary cafeteria, will honor players with guests including wives and girlfriends. A guest speaker from the Southwest Conference or a local entertainment group from Amarillo is sought. Odessa Worker in Critical Condition After Rig Accident

An oil field worker, L. J. Walker, was seriously injured when a three joint stand of drill pipe struck him on a D and K Drilling Company rig near Andrews, 12 miles south, at 7 a.m. Saturday. He remains in serious condition at Permian General Hospital after receiving eleven pints of blood.

351 Bales Ginned At Andrews Co-Op Gin This Season

H. R. Doty reports 351 bales of cotton ginned through Wednesday at the Andrews Co-Op Gin. The plant began in late September and aims for 450 bales to match last year, with about 100 bales remaining. Assistants this season are A. V. Morgan, Billy Morgan, and Bobby Dunn.

Sinclair Leases 160 Acres for Record Bid in Texas

Sinclair Oil and Gas Co paid one million dollars for a 160 acre lease in Andrews County Emma Ellen burger Field Block 10 and Triple N area Block 9 setting a record per acre. The UT board leased 37,545,558 acres for 7,001,000 across ten West Texas counties with bids from Ada oil and other firms.

Architects Approved to Plan Andrews Junior High Addition

The Andrews Independent School District board authorized W. W. Caudill and Associates of Bryan to draft plans for a new Junior High addition including a cafeteria and student center with an auditorium for 200. Four firm representatives visited to prepare preliminary sketches. the project is part of the original bond issue.
