Police report a burglary at the old chool gym area around 11:20 p m Tuesday. The intruder or intruders pried open doors, rifled the superintendent office, and escaped with unspecified money and items.
The Ninth District Texas Federation of Music Clubs hosts its 20th annual convention at the Community Building with a Fine Arts Concert featuring Hansel and Gretel a satire aimed at adults and children. Odessa College students will stage the production with about 40 participants including Paul Peck and Jerry Powell as directors. The event includes choirs from Sul Ross and Howard County Junior College and a reception, banquet, and various meetings culminating Saturday afternoon. Registration is $1 per person.
A jury venire of 80 residents is summoned in District Court for the State v John Dee Burks accused of slaying Veil Edger Parsons with an axe near town on October 21 Burks remains jailed after bond denial by District Judge G C Olsen and transfer from San Angelo on November 21 The list of prospective jurors includes numerous local residents and names
A crowd of about 2000 gathered around the courthouse square to greet Santa Claus as the lights on the courthouse, derrick, and downtown streets glowed. Santa arrived by firetruck and invited a 300 voice school choir to sing while the season’s schedule eased into multiple appearances through December.
Stanolind Oil and Gas Company No 1 Fasken Unit near Wolfcamp and Ellenburger in South Andrews County completed as a Pennsylvanian discovery and Wolfcamp field well. From the Pennsylvanian, the project flowed 282.88 barrels of oil per day.
The junior class presents The Little Dog Laughed a three act comedy at 8 p m in the high school auditorium directed by Willard LaGrone The cast features Betty Thames Gordon Whitworth Carla Sue Horton Tom Smith Bettie McQueen Butch Gerver Greta Patterson Dessie Echols and Mike Lee The scene centers on Laurie Huntington and her psychologist antics as the neighborhood reactions unfold
The School Advisory Council decides to present a written report at January meeting on one of five problems from a self evaluation. The first issue covers methods of reporting pupil progress to parents reflecting school aims for each child. Other topics include permanent records teacher training and a testing program to guide staff.
Andrews will join area high schools at the annual Activities Conference at Odessa College on Saturday. Students will take part in demonstrations and discussions in speech journalism ready writing slide rule and number sense. Invitations are issued to 58 area high schools for an 8 a.m. to 2 30 p.m. schedule.
Andrews mustangs begin 1956 57 season against 4A Big Spring Steers with only one starter from last year. Little Roger Glover returns as line starter. Curtis Hart out injured. Two other veterans Don Adams and Terry Hadaway bring experience. Ronnie Brice may start as a freshman. Other sophomores and juniors compete for rotation. Baseball back page.
After a two month delay due to property revaluation, city tax statements were mailed. Real estate taxes rise to 5 161 835 while personal property taxes fall to 957 664 as pleasure automobile taxes are dropped from the rolls. Total taxes amount to 91 792 63, up from 79 767 80 the previous year. Cars used for business remain taxed.
Dr. Willis A. Sutton challenged Lions Club members to emphasize personal interest in each child and to use organized effort to boost student development. He cited a Georgia case where school failures fell from 28 to 4 percent in two years after a local club offered encouragement, and urged parents to understand teens as they undergo rapid change.
