Santa Claus visits Andrews for an early Christmas lights ceremony on Monday at 6 p.m. on the south side of the square with a 400 voice choir, plus school choirs from Mrs Lynn Harrison Rose Marie Caron and others. The courthouse and downtown lit by Texas Electric Service. Santa remains until about 9 p.m. Store hours extended. Raymond Sharbutt chairs the committee with Bryan Baker as program chairman.
La Doyce Lambert, a Texas Tech graduate from Abernathy, joined the Lubbock Avalanche Journal as news editor after a year with the paper. He earned a BA in Journalism in August and served as Toreador reporter and editor at Tech. He interned with the Texas Daily News Association and worked on the Big Spring Daily Herald.
First Baptist Church outlines a four phase building program to add space for 1200 in Sunday School and training. The initial step costs 36,785,000 and includes three units beside the old auditorium. Contractors expect to begin within ten days.
The paper announces revised weekly deadlines for news and ads. Thursday edition deadlines move to 5 p.m. Wednesday for news and 6 p.m. Monday for Grocery ads, noon for other ads. Sunday edition retains Saturday after date plus 5 p.m. Friday for news and store ads.
Earnest Hays, a 6-6 former Andrews cager, joins Howard County Junior College for the 1956 57 season. He competes for a starting spot as HCJC aims to defend the Western Zone title won last year. Coach Harold Davis schedules two tournaments and three games, opening Tuesday in Big Spring against Decatur Junior College.
A total paid attendance of 4 332 was reported for the bi district football game between Andrews and Littlefield, with 44 passes issued by Littlefield and 46 more at the gate. Receipts totaled 5 747 dollars.
Andrews fire department responded after midnight to a trailer home in The Flats owned by Joe Brown and rented to C. Y. Fletcher. The structure was nearly a total loss and the cause remained undetermined.
Oil activity rises in Andrews County with two wildcats staked in area A near 8 miles northeast of Andrews and 17 miles west of Andrews. Milestone well Miles Kernaghan Jr No 3-A in the Jane L field produced 209 barrels of oil on a 24 hour test. Stanolind reports another good flowing well in the Glasco field with 250.42 barrels of oil from 12,555 to 12,584 feet. Funeral services for William Lewis Martindale 60 retired switcher for Sinclair Oil Co. are at 2 p m in First Baptist Church with Carl Grissom officiating. Burial in Andrews Cemetery. Survived by wife two sons two daughters a sister and five grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.
The second annual Christmas Community Sharing Plan organized by civic groups churches and oil firms seeks to provide food and gifts to every needy family while avoiding duplication. Call the Chamber of Commerce to submit names for Jaycee screening and determine needs. Contributions of clothes money toys and other items can be given to Joe Weatherby or Dixie Maltsburger. The plan added about 40 families last year with over 50 expected this year.
A $10,000 damage suit was filed in District Court against the Andrews Gas Company and manager Guy McGill. Alan Davis, a minor, by his father Leo A. Davis, alleges four year old Alan lost a finger on November 22, 1955, when a ditch digger near the Davis home operated as an attractive nuisance and failed to keep the boy at a safe distance.
The Andrews independent basketball league elected Corky Wilson as president and Georgie Carruth as vice president treasurer. Season opens Dec 10 with eight teams including Monterey Piggly Wiggly Andrews C Magnolia Evening Lions Jaycees Anthony's and Faculty. Rosters due by Dec Royals. A season end in late February with a four team tournament and trophies for top three teams plus gold basketball honors for first and second all team members.
Coach Vernon Johnson faces a big rebuild for the Andrews Mustangs as three starters graduate and height is scarce. Veterans Curtis Hart and Roger Glover return, with Don Adams and Terry Hadaway contesting starting roles. The team opens Friday against Big Spring and hosts the Andrews Tournament December 13 14 15. District 2 AA play starts January 18 at home versus Monahans Pecos.

Deputies John Suggs and D. Lansford brought Noah H. Elkins alias Jimmy from Bowie where he faces charges of stealing a car from Chester McDaniels on October 22. Elkins allegedly drove to Fort Worth and abandoned the vehicle at Hotel Texas parking lot. He was arrested by Bowie sheriff’s office and returned to await grand jury action.
The El Paso Natural Gas Company started a gathering plant six miles southeast of Andrews. The fully automatic facility will have four engines and one house, pumping gas to the TXL plant north of Odessa. Construction is expected to finish around the first of the month.
The Andrews Red Cross reports a quota of 163 dollars toward a 5 million dollar Hungarian relief drive. Contributions must reach St Louis headquarters by December 13 and may be mailed to the local Red Cross chapter.
