Fort Bliss Texas officials announce the first group of new officers in the Officers Reserve Corps will train under updated procurement rules for second lieutenants. The recruits enter active duty from civilian life, must have at least one year of military service since December 7 1941, have two years of college work completed, and be aged 19 to 32. They will serve a minimum of two years on active duty.

The season opens Friday at 7 30 p m in the new high school gym with Odessa Broncos A and B facing Andrews Mustang A and B. Coach Vernon Payne has limited time to assess the squads but brings back veterans Corley Hamilton Holman Phillips Short Humphreys Helvey Smith and others and adds promising recruits.
The Air Force will allow married men aged 20 to 26 with two years of college or equivalent, and strong qualifications, to apply for aviation cadet training starting November 15. First married applicants enter March classes at Randolph, Waco, Perrin, and Goodfellow AFBs with basic training spanning March July October. Advanced training occurs at Barksdale and Williams AFBs, completing the year. graduates receive commissions and active duty status with salaries around 4000 annually.
The Andrews Lions sponsor world renowned magician Dr Gaffney presenting a two hour show at the high school auditorium on Friday at 7:30 pm. Proceeds support school children and local meritorious services with the aim to fill the auditorium.

The program is open to every farmer in the county with funds limited. information is available at the County Agricultural Conservation Office. A. L. McCorley, chairman, notes funds support conservation work and that practices must meet program requirements.
Amos Vining and his son Jack were traveling from Andrews to visit relatives in Pampa when a late night snowstorm in Plainview halted traffic. Sixty cars were reported stranded between Plainview and Amarillo as a bus finally departed for Amarillo. The Vinings remained in Plainview overnight awaiting safer travel.
Mr and Mrs E L Denny celebrate the birth of twins Elwin Leroy and Pamela Joy on November 28 with birth weights of 5 and 6 half pounds respectively. An earlier birth on November 29 brings Roy Edward Hunter weighing 7 42 pounds. On November 23 Jerry Wayne joins the Carruth family.

Joe L. Snead has assumed management of the Corner Drugstore after J. R. Eastering’s resignation. Snead, formerly in Sterling City in the drug business and ranching, is brother of T. D. Snead. Texas Tech launches its basketball schedule at home against McMurry College Indians after finishing football as Border Conference champions. Coach Polk Robinson fields a 12 letterman roster with starters Don Grove Gene Gibson Wayne Bowles and James Hill.

Key home games include Odessa, Midland Brownfield Sundown Lubbock Big Spring and Seminole with various away contests and two junior games noted. Funeral services were conducted Friday at the First Baptist Church of Christ for Jack Kelly the auto wreck victim. The 1935 Ford Coupe he rode in overturned on Highway 51 south of Andrews Wednesday night. Johnny Thorton drove the car and escaped with minor injuries. The body was buried in Andrews Cemetery.
Weldon Greggston a high school student and son of E P Pierce sustained fractures of both arms in a motorcycle accident last Thursday. The crash occurred near the Y on the Eunice highway while Greggston was employed by City Grocery after school hours.
Sam A Leifeste assistant professor of marketing and administration of Texas Tech becomes Region One Interscholastic League chairman after the resignation of Dr Ernest Wallace. President D M Wiggins announced Leifeste who has long involvement in intramural sports and as a tennis coach at Lubbock High. The region spans from Wichita Falls to El Paso and Dalhart to Monahans, covering all class A and AA schools except basketball in league events.

A Texas Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Assn report shows about 58 million acres in Texas, nearly one third of the state, leased for oil and gas exploration. Leases cover 245 counties with production in 475 counties in early 1948. 1947 saw Kenedy, San Augustine and Sterling counties produce oil for the first time and landowners receive over 331.7 million dollars in leases rentals and royalties, including 89.3 million in lease and bonus payments and 242.4 million in royalties.
