The paper admits multiple misprints and headline reversals on last week's society pages. Names like Mrs. J H Galloway and Mrs J Alloway suffered header swaps. front page items on Sam Smith and a nine teen year old auto thief were also mixed.
Citizens report worsening mosquitoes in the county and town with pests chewing cotton boll hearts and threatening pets. Calls go out for kerosene treatment of standing water while promoting Quarterback Club season tickets at five home games for five dollars.
Funeral services for T. P. Lawdermilk 48 were held at 4 p m Wednesday in Ebberly Funeral Parlor Big Spring. He died of a heart attack Monday while employed by the county. He moved from Ackerly to Andrews last January. Survived by his wife three daughters Mrs Helen McPherson Jo Ann of Andrews and Mrs Jean Smith of Goldsmith four brothers and three sisters. Interred in Odd Fellows cemetery Big Spring.
School children who received the first typhoid serum shot must return for the second dose on August 24 and 25 at the elementary school. Smallpox and diphtheria vaccines will also be offered. Mrs Harris, the school nurse, will administer shots in the nurse’s office from 10 to 12 with Dr Z A Hutchinson assisting.
Mrs. Farmer and Mr. and Mrs. Mack Farmer and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Farmer and children traveled to San Angelo to visit Mack and Bill's mother who became seriously ill during the trip. She was reported better after they returned to Andrews on Tuesday afternoon.
The Church of Christ announces its annual fall revival from September 5 to 14 with Roy H Lanier of Abilene preaching. Evening services begin at 8 p m and will feature singing led by John Hall and Cam Fallowell. The public is invited to attend all services.
Miss Fannie Mathews county treasurer became ill last week after entering a DDT sprayed county office. The room had not been properly cleared and she suffered poisoning. She was reported much better by Thursday.
The Andrews Red Cross chapter reorganizes for a new fiscal year running June to June. Newly elected officers include Chairman Mrs. J. A. Ulmer, Vice Chairman Carl Sealy, Secretary-Treasurer Mrs. B. F. Seay, Executive Secretary Helen Anderson, Publicity Mrs. Charles Roberts Jr., Production Mrs. Roy Bennett, First Aid Roy Bennett, Home Nursing Mrs. Harris, Home Service Mrs. Carl Sealy.
A meeting is scheduled for next Friday night August 27 at 8 p m in the courthouse to organize a roping club. Charlie Scott and J B McCraw urge all interested persons to attend.
Cities Service Oil Company No 1 Y University proves a one mile north extension to the Wolfcamp producing area in the Shafter Lake field. The test flowed 123.5 barrels of 41.6 gravity oil in two hours with gas at surface within five minutes and oil starting at 12 minutes. Depth reached 8 695 feet into lime and shale as plans aim to top Pennsylvanian then Devonian pay. Several nearby wells are described with depths, formations, and early production readings.
Farmers fight a desperate battle across the county to save cotton from boll worms now infesting fields. Spraying with ten pounds of poison per acre replaces earlier six pound sulfur and DDT dusts as Lawrence Ogden reports his first county infestation in his farming career.
A lightweight aluminum irrigation setup is installed at Andrews schools to water the football field and campus. The system delivers about 1 inch of water per hour, covers a 100 foot diameter area with sixteen sprinklers, and is movable for use across the campus.
The Andrews Quarterback Club organized Saturday night with Max Ramsey elected chairman and Knox Irwin as vice chairman. Ham Pinnell treasurer and Charles Roberts, Sr. publicity man. Dues set at 3.00 with combined season ticket option at 7.50. Next meeting August 30 at 8 pm in the school cafeteria.
Fire destroys the Montgomery home on a Stanton lease in Fullerton field. Faulty attic wiring started the blaze at 3 am Saturday, wind driving flames across the house. Wally Montgomery and family escaped. a child and Callie exited through a bedroom window. A shower for the family was planned at the Methodist church and an additional one at Fullerton field on Tuesday August 24.
In a July primary note Buck Jackson thanks supporters in the 88th district and endorses Em ory T. Pat Corbett for State Representative. He urges friends to back Corbett in the August 28 run-off, calling the office vital for West Texas.
The Andrews Red Cross purchased a hospital bed to loan to families in need. They seek donations to buy sheets and linen to accompany the loaned bed.
A note from Mr. and Mrs. Wally Montgomery and Bobbie Jean Jones expresses deep gratitude for the Tuesday shower at the Methodist church. They praise the community as exceptionally kind generous and big hearted.
T T Greer of Mc Allison Fuel Oil was admitted for back injury. Thad Johnson of Trinity Drilling was injured. Mrs A W Holeman admitted for major surgery. Mrs W W Milton mother of Mrs Harry Tate admitted for surgery. Mollie Snodgrass recently injured in a car wreck dismissed Thursday. Doyle Gross fell from a tree with a broken nose leg and an arm, dismissed Thursday.
Mr and Mrs Edwin Hardie welcomed a baby girl named Eva Elizabeth weighing 5 pounds 4 ounces. The birth details are announced in family notices from their residence.
Funeral services for K. T. Meroney 39 were held at First Baptist church Monday afternoon. Meroney died Sunday from a heart attack after a month of illness. Rev. Eugene Brand officiated. He was born March 23 1909 in Collin County and lived in Montague County before moving to Andrews a year ago. Pallbearers were Floyd Peacock Bill Blair Dennis Nix Jim Underwood T D Hamilton and Dick Underwood. He survived by his wife three stepchildren Alton Ice Lubbock Cletus Ice Waco Mrs Mary Arbuckle Fort Worth his father and two brothers. He was a Baptist and had been a Christian since 1934. Burial was in St Jo Texas by Singleton Funeral Home.
Mr and Mrs M O Woolam and family returned home last weekend from a two week vacation through most of the eastern states. They attended the International Lions convention in New York City and travelled home via Atlantic Seaboard and southern states, with a highlight return through St Augustine Florida.
A Wallace theatre event in Andrews features Lash LaRue arriving at noon to lead a parade through the business district. An old fashioned western mounting precedes the procession with riders roping and saddling mounts at 11 15. The parade routes past the school buildings to the highway and bank corner ending at the Wallace theatre where LaRue is introduced and stars perform.
T D Hamilton Jr son of Supt and Mrs Thos D Hamilton was among 270 officers of the Methodist Youth Fellowship South Central Jurisdiction who attended the Young People's Conference at Mount Sequoyah August 3 12. The ten day meeting organized young leaders for discussion study and growth in Christian living and responsibilities within district sub district or annual conference groups.
The Andrews Mustangs depart Monday for a ten day training encampment on the San Saba River at Menard. Coach Tubb leads a young squad with only two returning players, as the team prepares for a tough season with limited experience.
