The labor party in county convention shows strength for fusion with old parties while denouncing corruption. Delegates clash over credentials and seating amid heated rules disputes, with William Walsh elected chairman and fusionists solidly backing the plan.
In Tremont temple delegates settled acrimony to endorse William A. Gaston for governor with a platform opposing the Kansas City principles. George Fred Williams led a reform bid but was silenced as Gaston’s slate won easy approval, and the ticket was made unanimous amid cheers. The platform urges reciprocity with Canada and repeal of tariff duties on trust controlled articles and notes rising coal and meat prices.
In Birmingham on Sept 17 the Republican state convention debated a platform clause favoring Roosevelt's 1904 renomination. J A Smith of Birmingham offered a substitute removing all reference to a renomination, triggering vigorous debate and turmoil as speakers argued about timing and campaign strategy.
The roll call defeated the substitute 158 to 146 as Alabama Republicans pass the new state constitution while disavowing responsibility for its enactment. Nominees listed include Governor J A W Smith of Birmingham and other statewide officers.
The New Hampshire Republican party debated changes to the prohibitory law with supporters prevailing. N J Batchelder of Andover won the gubernatorial nomination by acclamation, with Stephen H Gale of Exeter withdrawing. The platform backs Roosevelt’s renomination, condemns illegal combines, and opposes indiscriminate forest destruction.
Topeka Sept 17 nearly all nominations on the allied people's party ticket via initiative and referendum are in but some chosen have not signified willingness to serve if elected. President Roosevelt and other leading Republicans urged Speaker to reconsider his decision not to seek Congress. The Speaker remains committed to his original course and will not run.
The telegrams show Theodore Roosevelt urging Speaker Henderson to reconsider his withdrawal for the Third district race. Henderson defends his stance and assures no danger to the district while praising Governor Bolles and the party's protection and reciprocity platform. He notes a split with Iowa Republicans over tariff and monopoly language and calls Henderson's actions regrettable.
Washington reports George F. Roberts criticizes Speaker Henderson for not backing his congressional bid. Henderson refuses to recede from withdrawing his name, citing unease with tariff policy and distrust of free crude poison to cure the trust evil. Des Moines and Dubuque datelines reflect the regional reaction.
Herman Clark, famed as the founder of Billings, died in New York City after an operation for liver cancer. He helped establish Billings after a Northern Pacific contract spurred a mercantile venture and financed the Big Ditch irrigation project later sold to local farmers. His home was in New York at the time of death.
A heated Democratic primary in Deer Lodge sees two sheriff tickets led by John McMahon and John Robinson. North precinct delegates favor Robinson 3 to 2, while south precinct backs McMahon 52 to 47. Delegates named from Avon Elist on G T Farris and others. Deer Lodge North and South lists complete the contest.
Abram Chamberlain of Meriden, current state comptroller, was nominated by the Republican convention to succeed Gov. George McLean who declined due to poor health. Livingston W. Cleveland of New Haven was defeated on the first ballot with 156 votes to Chamberlain's 348. Resolutions endorsed President Roosevelt and his 1904 presidential renomination.
The remains of W. S. Stratton lay in state at the Mining Exchange in Colorado Springs, viewed by about 10,000 people. From 1 pm to 6 pm a steady line formed, with many still present at closing time.
Casket removed to the home on North Weber street after doors closed at 7 15. Floral tributes were the most elaborate ever seen in Colorado Springs. The Stratton residence will host the funeral service tomorrow morning with burial in the afternoon.
Reports of a Minor skirmish near Mindi station proved exaggerated as government troops fired on apparent insurgent spies. The Leplatta brings 1,000 troops, with more arriving, while Commander Potter of the Ranger orders guards on isthmus trains to insure uninterrupted railway traffic. Governor Salazar reports Perdomo’s first 1,000 men have arrived.
On the Northern Pacific changes, three Billings conductor families W P Campbell Frank Scott and W W Berry will move to Missoula. Six other conductors from Helena or Butte will also relocate to Missoula as suitable homes are found.
Dan Boyle of Livingston, recently promoted from trainmaster to assistant division superintendent of the Northern Pacific, made his first official visit to Billings. He met Trainmaster John Rapelje of the Yellowstone division and held a conference with local officials.
Republican leaders rent room at 113 Central Avenue in Great Falls and plan to open campaign headquarters there on September 17. Local party workers say the move will organize activities and fundraisers ahead of the upcoming race.
