Vancouver Washington September 16 reports no new deaths from the big forest fires. County commissioners left for the burnt northern district with a wagon load of supplies including clothing and necessities furnished by voluntary contributions for distribution to the settlers in need.
Oregon City report notes fires creeping through timber above Viola with danger of an east wind fanning them. Estimated timber losses in Clackamas County approach half a million dollars, while farmers face about 200000 in losses.
In Manila on September 16, reports say Macin Taal and Balusan volcanoes are unusually active. Balusan had been quiet for years and nearby residents are alarmed though no seismic disturbances have occurred.
Details reach Victoria from Empress of India about the murder of Bruce and Lewis by a mob in Changte. The killings followed a cholera outbreak blamed on foreigners. The mob beat Bruce to death in his room and mangled Lewis in the yard with spears and clubs. Soldiers later guarded the area and a British warship dispatched.
Wheat handlers in Tacoma walked out on September 16 demanding higher pay. They seek 30 cents an hour for truckers and 35 cents for weighers, against current rates of 25 and 28 cents.

Special Dispatch from Missoula reports Harry Presley of Superior Montana suffered a nearly complete throat cut and severed esophagus. His wife lies unconscious from a head injury at the ranch two miles from Superior. Presley writes to friends but refuses to reveal suspects or motives. The couple had quarrels, neighbors say, with town doctors calling it the most serious case they have seen.
The Utah state convention nominated Judge W. H. King for Congress and Maj. Richard W Young for supreme court justice. It adopted a platform praising trusts and beet sugar, opposing militarism, and backing tariff readjustment favoring trust-made goods. Debates with Rawlins and Kearns were encouraged. President McKinley’s death was mourned and Mrs. McKinley received sympathy.

Remains of the late WS Stratton lie in state at the Mining Exchange from noon to 6 pm. Funeral services are at Stratton's home Thursday at 10 am and private. Interment at Evergreen Cemetery at 2 pm Thursday, conducted by the Masons for relatives and immediate friends only.
In Joplin Missouri on September 4 Mrs J W Johnson wife of a U S Army sergeant at the recruiting station died on a train between Joplin and Kansas City after taking poison in a personal crisis. She grieved over her husband’s Philipp ine service and her son had just left for San Francisco en route to the Philippines. She was 22 years old.
