St Louis Circuit Attorney Folk accuses board directors of voting to provide funds that corrupt public officials for corporate gain at the expense of the people. The action frames a broader probe into corporate influence and public ethics.
In St Louis on September 13 circuit attorney Folk filed informations charging bribery and perjury against five prisoners tied to the city lighting bill. He aims to convict 18 members of the old house and vows a broad crackdown on corporate money influencing legislation. Delegate Charles Kelly remains missing amid the probe.
A New York state Republican conference endorsed Theodore Roosevelt and his administration for 1904 with a largely unified vote. Senator Platt stated the result was practically unanimous and that opposition existed but was in the minority. The meeting did not decide the state platform or anti trust plank.
Capt. William Goulding of the General Gordon died after being crushed beneath a falling lumber pile. His wife Minnie Goulding and Mrs. May Green, wife of Capt. Everett Washington report states Harry Martin a Coeur d Alene Idaho rancher was murdered and robbed in Monroe last night. Tom Perrin and A Mitchell are accused of the crime. Martin was known to have a large sum of money when last seen alive.
The flag of Colombia was raised on the Jessie Banning in San Francisco on September 13. The vessel will be christened the Bogota and after outfitting will sail to join the Colombian navy, crewed mostly by adventurous Americans.

A Kalama dispatch reports fires along the Lewis river destroying five logging camps and homes of over twenty settlers. D. L. Wallace his wife and two children Hanley's 12 year old son and Mrs. Graves are known to be dead with many campers missing. The area above Etna is said to be wiped out.
Cassels Colorado September 13 The largest and most destructive forest fire in Colorado is raging between Chase and Shawnee. A J Wells state timber official says the fire is beyond control and salvation of Platte canyon forests and towns depends on wind staying from the east. Damage to the Platte water sheds cannot be estimated.
A Dayton telegraph reports raging forest fires along the Tukanon driving sheep from summer ranges and destroying vast timber. Walla Walla observers note smoke so thick in the city that the Sun was hidden.

The steamship Columbia from San Francisco lost her wearings due to dense smoke near Tongue Point in the Columbia River yesterday and went ashore in the mud, about a mile and a half outside the channel.
Joseph Albert Mayer, Markus Mayer, and William Tarrant were arrested by the U S Secret Service on counterfeiting charges and held on $2000 bail each for preliminary examination. The case follows the earlier arrest of cafe waiters Charles Wood and Charles Weiser who tried to pass gilded coins. The Mayer brothers deny criminal intent and say the coins were to be used as jewelry. Tarrant says the coins were described as charms or watch fobs.
