Death of prominent figure Alexander Shepherd ends storied career

Washington learns of the death in Batopilas Mexico of Alexander R. Shepherd aged 67. He served as vice president of the board of public works and later governor of the District of Columbia during territorial government. He led improvements in Washington and helped block moves to relocate the capital. He later owned San Miguel silver mines and resided at Ratopilas. He leaves a widow and seven children.

Billings Man Joe Kannick Charged With Forgery

Special Dispatch to the Standard reports Billings authorities arraigned Joe Kannick on charges of forging and obtaining $21 from Terret. He was believed linked to a Forsyth bank and formerly with the First National Bank at Miles City. Kannick was arrested yesterday and jailed.

Man With Lantern Sparks Destructive Fire in Beaumont Oil Field

A fire in the Beaumont oil fields started by a man with a lighted lantern spread from the Keith Ward tract to burning derricks and tanks. About 90 derricks destroyed, 15 tanks burned, and losses estimated between 75 000 and 250 000 dollars. A 300 man field force fought the blaze as flames threatened the town.

Discovery of Anthracite Coal Near Big Timber

In the Boulder mining district near the Milwaukee and Standard mines, Alexander Cooper found several large anthracite lumps in a gulch. Experts say the coal is of the finest quality, very hard with a deep gloss, and a searching party has gone out to locate the lead along a slate rich mountain. The find lies on the proposed Big Timber and Cooke City railroad line under survey.

Nevada senator's wife killed in Alameda auto crash

Mrs. William M. Stewart wife of the Nevada senator died after an automobile collision in Alameda county Santa Clara avenue.
