Special Dispatch to the Standard reports Helena September 11 Attorney General S C Ford, made permanent chairman, refused to act prompting Fred L Gibson Livingston temporary chairman to preside. Ford, defeated by Joseph M Dixon in August primaries, claims the chairmanship was a sop and plans to return to his office. Ford, cousin of O H P Shelley, blamed Dixon for the rift, surprising many Republicans who expected reconciliation.
Clerk Sam L. Anderson estimates that Silver Bow County will spend between 95,000 and 710,000 on elections this year. Costs are $5 per registered voter or $10 per voter for the total votes cast, with about 15 percent of general fund receipts funneled to election operations. Five elections have occurred. two more are on the schedule, including a $525,000 bond school election and a general election. The county notes rising costs over four years, with 1916 to 1920 expenses climbing from roughly $74,463 to about $100,000 for seven elections.
Helena Sept 11 The Republican state convention closed after a long day with a large attendance and uneven county representation. Speakers included Senators Edwards Gibson Nelson Story and J M Dixon whose keynote framed the platform largely against non partisans as state socialists. Delegates approved a Dixon inspired platform and elected officers while pledging unity against anarchy and revolution.
Montana will receive 2 006 990 dollars from the federal treasury for the next two years under final allotment of federal road funds. The state must match this amount by July 1, 1922, or the allotment will be redistributed. The total reflects two federal road acts expiring when allotments are used.
Harding plans a coast to coast speaking tour in late September through election day with a tentative list including New York Boston Philadelphia Baltimore Indianapolis Louisville Milwaukee Omaha St Louis Sioux City Sioux Falls or Pierre Bismarck or Fargo Butte Boise Salt Lake City Denver Reno Tucson Oklahoma City Los Angeles San Francisco Portland Seattle Spokane. The Western swing would begin around Sept 27 with an eastern visit in late October.
Columbus report says one person drowned, two men missing, and several occupants unaccounted for after a cloudburst near Tarlton about ten miles southwest of Lancaster, Ohio, late today, with an automobile also missing a passenger.

It pledges aid to ex-service men and promises funds for prosecutions, arguing the socialist program would worsen taxation and threaten private industry and state finances.

Silas L. Bunker leading prohibition agents and deputy sheriffs raided Fred Parrot’s premises a mile west of Toppenish in Yakima. They seized three stills 260 gallons of mash 30 gallons of whiskey and found a dead rooster in a mash barrel with hens perched nearby. The operation was hidden in a hog pen and chicken house.
