Father English has long led Irish causes in Butte and authored books on the issue.
The 37th annual session of the Montana Pioneers Society closed with a banquet at the Hotel Rainbow in Great Falls. John F. Bishop of Dillon was elected president for the coming year after John F. Shober of Helena briefly led the society. Shober declined the post due to health, and the group honored his wish to resign. Bishop is among Montana’s oldest pioneers, arriving at Bannack in 1863.
Berlin Sept 10 Former Emperor William, at Doorn, reportedly told a Prussian visitor that when he and Germany return, “heads will fly to the right and left.” Vorwaerts summarizes the remark as showing Wilhelm’s old political boldness.
Seventy three first-aid teams competed with each team solving two problems today and three more tomorrow while scores remain secret until Saturday evening. John Boardman, manager of the Butte team, wired from Denver praising the demonstration and hoping to win. Continued on page five.
The Gaelic League bulletin reports Lord Mayor MacSwiney grows worse with much pain yet a clear mind on day twenty nine of his hunger strike. Sister Mary MacSwiney told reporters he spoke this morning and asked the date noting it was Friday the tenth, marking the start of the fifth week of the strike.
The Montana platform vows support for the national and state Democratic tickets, endorses the San Francisco platform, and backs anti profiteering aims. It urges laws to curb profiteers, protect consumers, and guarantee fair returns for workers, farmers, and merchants while assisting veterans.
Helena Sept 10 delegates at the Democratic state convention adopted a platform pledging unreserved support for Cox Roosevelt and the state nominees including non partisan and labor league selections. Judge Jones urged defeating the state ticket but his motion was tabled amid protests and Wheeler urged party unity.
Commissioners Fa bian and Simonson oppose the city proposal to rent ground floor space for offices at 7 500 a year, arguing heating and maintenance costs total well over the offer. They say the county cannot grant use of the main floor and will reply with an amended position after reviewing room needs and legal limits. The matter was filed during yesterday’s meeting and will be discussed again in the morning.
Louis Dondino, 38, convicted by a jury in Duluth district court of inciting a riot tied to the June 15 mob lynching. Jurors deliberated 55 minutes. maximum penalty five years. Sentence deferred. He allegedly drove a truck urging pedestrians to join a neck tie party as the mob seized three roped victims. Leonard Hedman and Byer Olson faced juries as their case proceeded.
A Swedish metal trades committee advising against emigration of 6900 skilled workers found the Briansk district of Russia unsuitable due to poor sanitation and scarce food. It cites mismanaged Urals industries, water-filled mines, stolen factory equipment, and despondent people. Moscow counters food as a crime, warns three years hard labor for carrying potato enough for personal use, and tightens penalties amid a worsening Petrograd food crisis.
