Helena Oct 2 Democrats plan to oppose the non partisan league ticket led by B K Wheeler in a state wide campaign under Sen Henry L Myers. Independent clubs form in counties and back Cox and Roosevelt for president and VP, with support for non Townley nominees.
Two New York youths Richard F Crandell and Gordon McGuire traveled by foot and varied transport from White Plains to Missoula to enter the University of Montana. They read a campus catalogue, mapped their trek, and joined the university community. McGuire enrolled in law and Crandell majors in journalism.
Butte attorney Peter Breen aged 61 died of heart failure yesterday afternoon in his Mantle block apartment. He spoke with friends at 3 p.m. and died at 4, attended by Dr. F J Williams. Self educated, Breen passed the bar after mining work in Colorado and Montana, becoming a renowned lawyer noted for wit and hard fighting. He served Silver Bow county as attorney in 1900 and 1902 and was a Montana constitutional convention member and early Knights of Labor and miners union counsel, gaining fame defending Moyer Haywood Pettibone at Boise and later for the Butte Miners' Union during the miners' hall ownership suit.
Galveston Texas October 2 Fire officials declined to assign a definite cause for a waterfront fire that began early today and burned unchecked through 15000 bales of Mexican sisal on a pier. Firemen were aided by Texas Rangers and National Guardsmen called in amid a longshoremen strike. No damage estimate available.
The Haguf reports the Dutch government will tax the former German emperor on an annual income of 1,500,000 guilders after a lengthy review. A delay until November 1 is granted for a definite reassessment as income fluctuates.
Dalton Mass Oct 2 Former U S Senator Murray Crane of Massachusetts died at his home early today after a period of illness. He had attended Governor Coolidge's notification ceremonies in Northampton last summer and was involved in the League of Nations fight at the Republican National Convention last June. The immediate cause of death was sleeping sickness, with relief to be four or five days. He passed away at 4 o'clock this morning after his condition worsened last night.
Montana state supreme court granted the former-labor party presidential electors a spot on the November 2 ballot while denying the socialist party. Secretary of State Stewart had refused earlier, saying filing petitions expired before the presidential primary. The farmer-labor electors named Frank Apperton Henry Weber D I Ewing and J W Richardson were ordered certified.
Portland Telegram researchers show wholesale food costs retreat from peak by large margins with beans down 50 percent and rice 42 percent. sugar 35 percent, flour 14 to 12.75 a barrel, condensed milk 7.25 to six a case. In Omaha hotel leaders report roughly 10 percent restaurant price cuts citing cheaper coffee and vegetables.
Helena Montana October 2 William A Chessman a pioneer miner and member of the constitutional convention who served five terms in the territorial legislature died here today after an illness of a month. The funeral will be Monday afternoon.
St Louis dated report quotes Edward T. Collins, Chicago second baseman, alleging two suspended teammates and tied seven players undermined the White Sox in 1919, naming Arnold Gandil among those blamed for corruption in the World Series gambling scandal. Collins cites lack of proof against the other suspected players.
Mrs. Jo seph Fennah and her daughter Jean have vanished from 1627 Farragut avenue. Ald of the police reports extensive searches after Mr. Fennah, describing his wife as 5 feet 6 inches tall with blue eyes and brown hair, left a note saying she could no longer bear to be a burden. The two were last seen last Wednesday afternoon, with clues leading perhaps to Dillon or her mother’s home on West Quartz street.
Abdul Majid heir apparent to the Turkish throne tried to take poison Thursday night. A servant stopped him, and officials say despair over the country’s future prompted the act. The sultan urged nationalists to accept a compromise to save the empire.
New Orleans reports a tropical hurricane wrecked the steamship Speedwell from Belize to New Orleans. Four men were rescued from a lifeboat. another lifeboat with 13 persons was lost. Three men and two women are confirmed dead, with officials still unsure where the five victims were. Search for the remaining 13 continues in the gulf.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, Democratic vice presidential nominee, declared in western Kentucky speeches that Senator Harding faces a serious split in the Republican party due to his failure to state plainly his position on the League of Nations. The remarks were made in Henderson, Kentucky, on October 2.
