British public remains puzzled by a long fasting protest as a group of men continue to endure hunger beyond fifty days. Reports describe the persistent sheltering of the group and the hidden motives behind the standoff.
London dispatch reports on the 12 Irish hunger strikers led by Terence MacSwiney, lord mayor of Cork, abstaining from food for over 50 days in protest against British rule. Medical experts acknowledge the perplexing fortitude and note the case challenges established ideas of human endurance.
Chancellor Edward C. Elliott told the Butte student body that the Montana School of Mines, as part of the University, has the brightest prospects for future recognition among professional schools. He cited favorable location and urged financial backing and effective advertising to reach world wide status and a higher place in public regard. He spoke during the first address of the 1920 21 school year and noted proposed improvements, though he warned these would be useless without support.

Chicago Oct 1 Four major league clubs lead a drive to abolish the national commission and place baseball under a civilian tribunal of public figures. William Veeck Charles A Comiskey Barney Dreyfuss and John J McGraw sign the letter proposing salaries higher than current baseball officials and listing possible tribunal members such as Pershing Wood Johnson Landis and McAdoo.
Charles Ponzi, promoter of the famous scheme that promised 50 percent profits, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston on two forty three count charges for using the mails to defraud. He is jailed at East Cambridge and faces additional state larceny charges.
Republican National Committeeman C. H. P. Shelley arrived in Chicago for talks with Will H. Hays and forecast a 15 000 to 20 000 plurality for Harding Coolidge in Montana. He says the state ticket will also win and the progressive faction backs the national ticket, noting improvements from a month ago. Shelley, a former progressive leader, cites half the state's precincts checked.
An Anacortes, Washington report says Mrs. Wheeler Brown, longtime Salvation Army worker, was struck and killed by a car driven by a local physician rushing to a hospital for Harriet O’Grady. The physician source was en route for the 16 year old, who had been badly hurt moments earlier by another vehicle. Her husband, who walked with her, was injured and hospitalized.
Mayor J B McCavitt opened the new road ceremonies in the Margaret theater with boosters filling the hall. Gov. Stewart praised the near completion and noted a statewide program of permanent highways. W L Collins outlined seven years of effort and a $150000 county bond, while federal aid and state engineers earned credit for the project.
Helena Oct 1 Arguments were heard by the state supreme court today in petitions by Clinton Williams and J W Richardson against the secretary of state to compel placement of four nominees for presidential electors for the socialist and former labor parties on the official November ballots.
Jonesboro Tennessee October 1 thirty five to fifty service men from the National Sanitarium at Johnson City opened fire on the jail in a bid to seize a negro prisoner held in connection with an attack on a white waitress. The militia from Johnson City dispersed the mob after a sharp skirmish exhausting ammunition reserves.
A landmark Anaconda celebration marked the opening of Montana's first permanent highway stretch. Gov. Sam V. Stewart led officials and crowds in a 259 automobile parade over a three mile route, spanning Anaconda to multiple cities, with Warm Springs visits and a day of dancing and theatre.

The incident occurred as they were en route to Bennetts ranch near Whitehall.
Salt Lake City message says Charles W. Nibley, Mormon church bishop and Utah-Idaho Sugar manager, offered a reward of 31,000 for the capture of the author of two letters threatening death unless 10,000 was buried under an old building near the Salt Lake railroad yards as restitution for price gouging on sugar. Sioux Falls report notes evidence to be shown to the grand jury on charges that Utah-Idaho Sugar sold sugar at excess profits to Jewett Brothers and Jewett of Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, with U.S. Attorney E. W. Fiske stating the grand jury will hear the case on Oct. 19.
Secretary Daniels charged the Republican party with purchasing Senate control in 191s. He said the GOP majority is “out on bail” and predicted consequences after the Supreme Court acts. He cited Michigan seat purchase as enabling committee packing against tax cuts and arms peace measures.
