The Anaconda company acquires the Hawkesworth manufacturing plant and will standardize its mines using the Hawkesworth bit. Inventor A L Hawkesworth headed the former Hawkesworth mechanical department at the Butte mine and after his death the technique was refined by the Hawkesworth staff. Production began in 1925 and will expand with new factories planned.
The school board deadlock in district No 1 may end soon as citizen women’s party members reject the two nominations from county superintendent Mrs Agnes Meade Hanratty. They propose a 30 name cross section of city citizens ready to accept any name from the list. Hanratty replied there are several names on the list.
The Nine Mile road to Harding Way will be open for outgoing traffic today while incoming vehicles to Butte from Harding Way must use Roosevelt Drive. State Highway Commissioner James H B Rowe notes the road is rough but will ease congestion and avoid the Roosevelt Drive grade. No blasting Sunday. drivers proceed at their own risk through the canyon.
Alfred E. Smith stands close to the Democratic presidential nomination as the convention approaches in Houston. With 1,100 delegates, two-thirds needed, Smith backs claim 710 first ballot votes and potential to reach a swift clinch. Opponents concede at least 650 votes but hope a developing surprise can halt the momentum.
