Butte hosts a three day Montana veterans convention with entrance ceremonies marked by bugle calls and drum beats. An estimated 4090 visitors are expected as clans auxiliaries and patriotic societies gather, parade, and serenade hotels and offices amid flags and festivities.
Frank R. Gooding Idaho's senator and former governor died at his residence after months of illness and a Mayo Clinic operation. His career began in politics during the crackdown era of the early 20th century and he rose to power amid tumult. Continued notices mention a conference program and social events in Idaho.
Electric wires around a dog pen to deter stray dogs fatally electrocuted Oliver Woodton, 6, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Wooton, near Walter L Blau’s property in Yakima Washington.
Dr O M Lanstrum laid to rest in Forestvale Cemetery after Masonic rites. Attendees included mourners from many states and Helena Montana as well as numerous admirers who valued his 33 years of service to humanity.
Johnny Farrell, the 27 year old Irish American star from Little Old New York, defeats Bobby Jones by one stroke at Olympia Fields Illinois to win the United States Open Golf Championship. Farrell sinks an eight foot putt on the final green after a superb mashie shot from the rough securing his historic victory.
Six persons all from Topeka died when their car collided with Union Pacific passenger train No. 137 four miles west of Topeka. Five died instantly. a sixth died en route to a hospital. The group, returning from Manhattan after an Odd Fellows meeting, perished in the unobstructed crossing wreckage strewn along the track for 190 feet.
Berlin reports rescue efforts for Gen Umberto Nobile and five companions stranded on drifting floes in Hinlopen Strait. Nobile sustained a leg fracture and is in critical condition aboard the Quest. Aviators from Italy and Sweden attempt landings on the ice as land parties race toward the marooned crew.
The Kellogg draft for an outlawing of war is published to 14 signatories. The notes explain modifications to meet objections while preserving the right of self defense and compatibility with Locarno and League obligations. The documents were delivered to foreign offices including Australia.
Paris June 24 The French national legislature enacted Premier Poincare's plan to stabilize the franc with little opposition in both chambers. The measure aims to restore monetary stability and confidence as the government moves to curb inflation and ease financial pressures.
General Umberto Nobile of the Italia dirigible expedition has been rescued from the ice after a month adrift. The rescue, confirmed by the base ship Citta di Milano, was carried out by Captain Ternberg in the Swedish plane Upland which landed near the group and departed with Nobile.
President Coolidge and Mrs Coolidge attended a Brule church service after a previous indisposition. John Taylor the blind lay preacher conducted the ceremony while 560 visitors filled the small church. Governor Christiansen of Minnesota was present but did not speak to the couple.
