Houston June 21 The Democratic convention shaping for Governor Alfred E. Smith's nomination drew party heavyweights to Houston for informal talks and hotel lobby bartering. Key figures including Reed of Missouri and Robinson of Arkansas are expected to arrive ahead of the convention to guide strategy and secure delegate support.
Governor Alfred E. Smith reiterated opposition to rescinding prohibition, replying to a reporter’s question after Norman Mack’s remarks. The Albany political note included Mack’s claim that states may set their own alcohol content, which Mack later said was his own view, not Smith’s.
In MIndle Oklahoma near Bowlegs Sheriff Sparks and deputies shot and killed George Kimes father of the bandits George and Mat Kimes during a raid. Kimes opened fire with a pistol and an axe man attacked the house prompting the exchange of gunfire.
In Bucharest on June 21 Prince Carol of Roumania faced a rare private proceeding for his estranged wife Princess Helene of Greece. The somber courtroom lacked both spouses witnesses or spectators with a Roumanian lawyer the only participant.
Carl Albert a Oklahoma University freshman and son of a coal miner won first place in the finals of the fourth annual intercollegiate oratorical contest on the constitution in Los Angeles. He received 1500 dollars. runners up included Herbert Wenig of Stanford second for 1000 dollars and Allan Frew of Davidson third for 750 dollars.
Two would be pilots Albert Ney Jr and Roscoe W Camp along with Jesse F Kelley a student mechanic and Maurice C Andries of Virginia City completed the federal writ examinations held yesterday under the direction of George W from the federal aviation union bureau in Portland Oregon. Glacier Park Montana June 21 A five member protein committee will be appointed to work with the State Agricultural College and the state department of agriculture on a standard method for buying wheat by protein content at country elevators. The Northwestern Grain Dealers association endorsed sampling uniformity and cooperation between farmers and buyers. Ed Bell Jr. urged reflecting the protein factor in prices and described sampling procedures before harvest. Additional speakers included P A Lee A H Bowman and L E Brown. Paul Frigg presided.
Cabinet member Nork wins leadership of a national body and plans to tender resignation to President Coolidge within a month.

A strong earthquake shook Alaska’s southern coast with three distinct shocks. The 3:30 a.m., five hours later, and 9:20 a.m. tremors were recorded on seismographs in Washington, Victoria, Spokane, and Seattle. Seward territory reported ground rolling like waves but no damage.

Elbow Lake near Mis soula in the Swan river valley may be renamed Lindbergh Lake in the future. The site gained brief fame when Lindbergh spent his first postflight vacation there during a Guggenheim tour. John D. Ryan, Anaconda Copper chairman, helped route Lindbergh through Butte.
