A. H. Douglas of Logansport Indiana was elected superintendent of Butte schools, succeeding W. E. Maddog. Douglas has held similar position in Logansport for 25 years and resigned last year to pursue a degree.
A. H. Douglas of Logansport Indiana was named superintendent of school district No 1 after the school board committee of the whole unanimously selected him to fill the vacancy created by W E Maddock. Douglas, 28, has long worked in Indiana schools and will begin duties soon under a three year contract with escalating salaries from 4500 to 6000.
Emma Bergdoll told a House investigating committee that Maj. Bruce R. Campbell received $5,000 to win Grover Bergdoll’s release. The witness claimed $4,000 was later deposited with NY Stock Exchange members and $2,000 more then evaporated in market trading. Campbell denied, later summoned by the War Department.
The mother of wanted slacker G. 0. Bergdoll charges that she paid five thousand dollars to Campbell for access to higher-placed individuals. The report notes the alleged arrangement was made to secure Bergdoll's release and implicates connections with officials.
Washington July 19. A verbal slash between Senator Henry L Myers of Montana and Senator Tom Watson of Georgia marked consideration of the soldier cash bonus bill. Watson harassed Myers with personal allusions while Myers sought to address, provoking threats of retaliation and ongoing crossfire that entertained fellow senators and galleries. Continued on pages.
Helena July 15 The funeral for former Lieutenant Governor A B Spriggs who died here today will be held tomorrow morning with interment at the Scottish Rite Consistory temple The note of condolence from United States Senator Walsh and W A Clark is published along with other messages Mrs Spriggs mourns the loss of her husband in a city obituary that notes his high official standards and service.
The Theodore Roosevelt post 637 of the American Legion demanded an investigation into city officials who hosted a reception committee for Jack Johnson, the imprisoned boxer. Protest also targeted an Legion official defending Johnson’s wartime record and proposing a Johnson Dempsey bout for the heavyweight title.
Formal resignation of BF Maginn announced by Nellie Small county superintendent, naming Dr. T. J. B. Shanley to fill the vacancy. Confirmation delayed as James Baldwin argued Maginn had not submitted resignation, creating no vacancy.
Tyler dispatch reports George H Peters 20 found unconscious after being gagged three miles from Chandler Texas. A note signed Khu Ku claimed kidnapping and about 240 dollars stolen. Later news from Austin notes a resolution to investigate Klan activity in Texas in the current special legislative session.
A senate sub committee report condemns methods used by navy in gathering evidence at a training station. The majority cites responsibility of former Secretaries Daniels and Roosevelt. minority disputes, says enlisted men were not informed of improper methods. Roosevelt protests, requests open hearing after report completion.
Calgary July 19. Farm representatives will succeed the Liberal party in control of the Alberta provincial government as a result of yesterday's election. Latest returns today gave the farmer candidates 43 seats with the defeated Liberals retaining only 15.
The Associated Press reports London July 19 that Prime Ministers plan to use their current London talks to set the stage for a preliminary examination of the pact. The Times notes the approach as part of ongoing Dominion discussions.
Bees swarmed through Bozeman business district halting traffic for over an hour as crowds fled and tourists paused along the Yellowstone Trail. City street foreman coaxed the motion to resume with a long whistle, after the swarm appeared to lose its queen.
