Lightning strikes destroy 11 oil tanks this month

Casper Wyoming July 18 Two oil storage tanks at Mid West Refining near Casper were struck by lightning and ignited. Workmen battle flames with water and liquid extinguishers as 12 foot dirt walls are built to shield others. Eleven tanks hit since June 17, officials not estimating loss. Bank Robbery Hits Orangeville Bank in Ohio Heist

Five masked gunmen robbed the Orangeville Bank in Warren Ohio on July 18 and escaped with seven thousand dollars. They forced the bank president into a car, drove him five miles from Orange and dumped him from the vehicle.

Federal Surgeon Studies Spotted Fever Menace

Dr. Thomas Parran Jr of the United States Public Health Service arrived in Helena to study Montana’s campaign to eradicate spotted fever in the Bitter Root valley and western regions. The federal bureau will provide assistance as lab work in Helena and field work in Bitter Root valley are examined.

Vick to be sentenced to death again for Sheriff Wyman murder

Albert Vick also known as Davis, who was sentenced to hang for the Beaverhead County sheriff slaying, will face another death sentence Wednesday. Judge Smith will preside, with papers from the supreme court delaying the resentencing. A death watch is maintained and guards describe him as highly dangerous. The execution is planned behind the sheriff's office in a fenced courtyard between the jail and courthouse.

Street Car Fares Reduced With Ticket Option

Reduction of street car fares from 8 to 6 1/2 cents and cash fare to 10 cents takes effect tomorrow in Butte. The railroad commission approved the fare schedule requested by the street car company. Commutation tickets will be sold in multiples of four and available immediately. Public savings mainly on the Columbia Gardens line, with daily costs dropping from 18 to 12 1/2 cents for a workday round trip.

July 19. Former A L E Spriggs died morning after several days of illness. He was about 52 years old, came to Montana from Wisconsin, taught at Confederate Gulch, then clerked for G M Jones in Townsend. He later helped establish a Winston store and served Meagher County in the Fourth Legislature, championing Broadwater County’s creation.

From a photograph taken during his lieutenant governorship, A B Spriggs is noted as elected to the office of lieutenant governor and served the full term. Barron Killed in Motor Wreck Near Billings

Arthur Lovett Barron a local motion picture operator was instantly killed and J L Byrd proprietor of the theater where Barron worked was slightly injured in a motorcycle accident near Merrill during a vacation trip. The sidecar wheel struck a rock skidding the machine turning over the riders with Barron sustaining fatal injuries and Byrd suffering shoulder and leg injuries.

Hades Popping in a Penitentiary at Pittsburg

Prisoners at the Western penitentiary broke discipline fired four buildings and sparked an uproar as guards reinforced by deputies and armed citizens battled to quell the riot. About 600 inmates were in the dining hall when a fire started, guards clashed with convicts throwing tableware, and the fire department and police were summoned as the outbreak continued.

Helena July 18 Charles Stevens convicted of robbing the Union Bank and Trust Company of this city of 40000 and sentenced to 14 years in the penitentiary. The state supreme court denied the motion for a rehearing in affirming the conviction from the district court.

Fire damages Broughton & Son Grocery in Butte building

A blaze started in rubbish in a rear room of the Broughton and Son grocery, at East Park rect, Butte. The two story brick building suffered heavy damage to a rear store room and household furnishings, with only minor harm to the main grocery section. Firemen arrived quickly to prevent spread to adjoining structures. The cause is believed to be accidental and tied to accumulated debris. continued on page 8.
