Fire crews from the forest service fought wildfires in Deer Lodge area after an early discovery of a blaze in Little Basin Creek Reservoir. Four negroes were killed and one white man wounded near Rayville Louisiana when a sheriff's posse, trying to arrest two negro women, faced armed resistance. The clash followed an incident at a nearby plantation after two negresses allegedly assaulted children at a swimming hole, prompting warrants and later reinforcements to serve them.
Chicago July 17 Five million bushels of wheat and corn will be collected for destitute widows and orphans of Armenia and Syria. The drive is led by Alonzo J. Wilson as international campaign director with campaigns in September and October, building on a prior effort that fell short of the 5 million goal.

Census data for 1920 report 19,362 residents aged 10 and over in Butte employed, forming 46.5 percent of the city population and 65.8 percent of those 10 and over. Of these, 81.9 percent were men and 18.1 percent women. Mining extraction led with 33.6 percent, followed by manufacturing, transportation, trade, and services across various sectors.
Joe Sommers of Butte was fatally injured near Garrison when struck by Milwaukee passenger train No. 16, the Olympian. He was reportedly standing on a bridge while fishing. thrown into the creek, rescued by train crew, later died at the hospital after briefly regaining consciousness and giving his name and home. Police in Deer Lodge sought relatives or friends.
A small boat and heavy cable saved 329 tourists from danger after the steamer Rapids King grounded in Long Sault rapids near Ogdensburg New York. The boat was towed ashore to prevent being swept away by the turbulent waters.
By the Associated Press Helena July 17 Former Lieutenant Governor A B Spriggs has probably won his fight for life. He rests comfortably this evening and his temperature has dropped noticeably in the last 24 hours. Physicians and friends predict recovery within days as he remains under close care.

A Moscow dispatch reports a locust swarm adding to famine across Russia. In the Kuban and Black Sea regions crops are badly damaged, with special staffs organized and portions of the army mobilized to combat the pests.
The Montana Automobile Association announced the first official action of its formation to investigate high gasoline prices. Secretary-Manager C R Brazier said data will be presented to the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, supplementing a Montana public utilities commission petition seeking a special investigator to hold hearings in Montana.
The head-on crash on the Pottstown and Phoenixville electric railway near Pottstown Pa left three dead Calvin Levan the motorman and Carl M Engle and Mrs Stinley Wilson all residents of Pottstown. Between 35 and 40 people were injured in the July 17 accident reported by the Associated Press.
London July 17 The Lloyd George de Valera discussions on an Irish general conference will resume tomorrow likely with Ulster premier Sir James Craig present. Sinn Fein says a general exchange is not possible as Ulster’s head is outside Southern Ireland negotiations. The weekend passed quietly with no disorder and de Valera reiterates self determination while awaiting government proposals to be modified and later approved by the Irish people.
A Lloyds dispatch from Kustendje Romania reports the British steamer General Turner, en route from the Danube to Rotterdam with grain and cattle, struck a mine July 13 off Callakra and sank. All crew members were saved.
The Associates Press reports motion picture actor Owen Moore married his leading woman Kathryn Perry in Greenwich Connecticut on Saturday. Moore had recently been divorced from Mary Pickford, who subsequently wed Douglas Fairbanks. The couple announced their marriage today in York.
In China on July 14, the national cantonal government led by Dr Sun Yat Sen states its Washington envoy Ma She will tell the United States that the Peking administration can no longer represent China and is unfit to send a delegate to the Far Eastern conference. The Canton government seeks representation and asserts Peking is bankrupt and politically deserted.
Secretary Hoover proposes diverting a large share of the nation’s 22.0 billion in savings deposits to home building to relieve a shortage of about 1.5 million homes. He cites a housing crisis with roughly 117 families per 100 homes and urges channeling postal and national bank deposits through the Federal Reserve Act to stabilize the economy and boost construction.
