Butte celebrated in civic pride with Elks and Eagles offices awarded by the state aerie as a large throng defied snow and wind. Festivities stayed lively from noon, with bands, shows, and crowded halls as Billings Anaconda and Helena delegations joined in the five day event despite a continuing snowstorm.
A short Montana convention of Elks convened with a single brief session and adjourned immediately until noon today. The event focused on standard organizational matters and routine motions within the lodge.
The Montana Elks state convention began with Dr. F K Savage welcoming delegates in Butte. J H McElroy of Billings said Butte’s prosperity boosts the entire state as delegates from 14 lodges arrive, with plans for an Elks home on Flathead Lake and officer elections. Delegations from Helena, Great Falls, Livingston, Bozeman and Missoula are expected later.
The federal government total cost for the fiscal year ending Friday was 5,115,027,689 dollars, per the treasury department. Revenues from all sources reached 5,624,932,960 dollars, with a general fund cash balance of 549,678,105 dollars sufficient for several days of expenses. In Helena authorities learned promoters at the Missoula fairgrounds will not cancel Sunday races despite Attorney General Rankin ruling Sunday racing at a race track violates state law. Promoters say they have obtained legal advice and dispute the interpretation, insisting races proceed as planned.
First prize awards include 100 dollars for a 2 year 3 week old baby. Second prize details are unclear with months and weeks. Third prize goes to Eloise Merrick, a 13 month old resident of Bow Street. Location listed as 1a Scown 949 inches on Bow Street.

The convention elected Willa Malloy as chaplain and William Shea as secretary with Zeitz of Helena as inside guard and Geors Roundup outside guard. Don B. Kin Troy Havre and Frank H. Billings named trustees. Howard G. Bennett of Great Falls is state representative to the grand Aerie with Abe Cohen as alternate. The time and place of the next state convention were left to an executive committee. Eagles Have Arrived. The delegates resolved to elevate the organization to its rightful rank in fraternal circles.
Aviatrix Mim Valia Nelson of Twin Falls Idaho was killed instantly when a car she was practicing in at the race track Turned over and pinned her beneath the vehicle. The incident occurred during a practice spin in North Platte Nebraska.
Chicago July 2 Carl Wanderer convicted of murdering an unborn child and taking part in a holdup was declared sane by the jury and sentenced to hang on July 3.
