Senate Committee on Commerce recommends adoption of the subsidy measure to support Butte High School pupils graduating mid term. The majority asserts passage will secure America's supremacy in shipbuilding and maritime trade.
Washington Jan 17 The senate commerce committee authorized a favorable report on Senator Frye the report to be made by Frye. Democrats on the panel voted against reporting and for striking out the general subsidy provision. The committee amended the bill allowing mail carrying vessels to be iron or steel and reduced bounty vessels to 1900 cross registered tons. The Frye summary argues for maritime supremacy in Asia and the Gulf of Mexico and for US trade with South American republics within ten years. It cites costs and deficits and compares American and British mail services, noting proposed weekly and semiweekly routes and the aim of maritime independence.
Elmer D. Patts died at Hyde Park Chicago at 3 o clock this morning from meningitis. Born October 1 1865 in Paoli Wisconsin he studied at Madison and the University of Wisconsin and practiced law in St Paul Missoula Anaconda and Chicago. A former state senator and Missoula university advocate his death ends a noted Republican career.

Committeeman J Grerge of the Auxiliary State McKinley Memorial association reports resolutions backing Governor Nash of Ohio’s request for a McKinley day on the 29th.
