Nichard Croker steps down after decades as head of the Tammany Democratic organization. He relinquishes his position and offers farewell remarks and advice to successors and followers.
New York January 11 Richard Croker retires from formal Tammany leadership. Lewis Nixon chosen to chair the finance committee and lead the organization with Croker expressing approval and urging confidence. Nixon pledges to strengthen the party and accept active leadership rather than a figurehead.
Helena dispatch reports a heated anti Carter meeting with about 22 Republicans pledging a wider battle against Carter rule. Activists promise to push against Carter nominees and rally support in counties as Tom Carter appears to hold the party machine.
William J. Bryan visited Boston and Cambridge on January 11. Mayor Collins hosted a luncheon and Bryan met with city officials before a large Harvard University audience. His remarks on trusts taxation and imperialism drew strong applause and a post event reception followed at the Harvard Union.
Governor Van Sant issued a formal call for an extraordinary session of the Minnesota legislature to meet on February 4. The tax commission’s work is complete and its report is ready for submission for consideration and potential law enactment.
Work will begin Monday on a temporary wooden bridge at Black Eagle falls on the Portage cut off of the Montana Central. The new line is to be put into operation one week later.
Montana Central engine No. 38 driven by George Ulery struck street car No. 17 at the Royal mill crossing, demolishing the trailer car but leaving the engine and front car intact. Previous two wrecks at the same spot injured a motorman and other passengers.

The Northern Cheyenne reservation lies 65 miles south of Forsyth within Rosebud county and houses about 1 000 Cheyennes under Maj J C Clifford at Lame Deer Tongue river agency.
Washington dispatch says Agent Clifford in charge at Tongue Agency Montana went to meet the commissioner of Indian affairs to request a cavalry detachment from Fort Keogh due to trouble at the agency. He and the Cennes were excited but offered no details.
J FP Berginger of Seattle Steam Laundry died after a machine belt failure caused a burst steam pipe. He was adjusting the belt when a fragment struck him, breaking multiple bones. He recently moved to Seattle from an unspecified location and leaves a widow.
