Greenwich Conn Mrs Josephine Lauder the mother of Miss Josephine Lauder announces the engagement to retired champion Gene Tunney. The social register family confirms the forthcoming marriage with high society interest in New York and waterways of press attention.
A tri motor plane named Rainbow crashed at Orly airfield injuring pilot Maurice Drouhin and two others, with mechanic Lannett killed. Drouhin died hours later in hospital, as engineers Gianelle Manuel and Couzinet designed craft for Atlantic crossing. The wreck scattered parts along 1,690 yards of the field during final test day before planned transatlantic flight.
In Omaha Nebraska on August 8 a Volstead violator uses trading stamps to outsell rivals. A stamp is issued with each bottle and four stamps can be exchanged for an extra bottle, reports federal city agent Ralph Jones.
Walter F. Cutler a 21 year old University of California student from Franklin Massachusetts was killed when the car he rode in collided with a machine driven by David Cooley 20 of Anaconda on the Butte Anaconda highway at 2 30 yesterday morning. The crash happened west of the Scott Peck ranch about a half mile from the scene.
Silver Bow county reports a 1927 28 general operating expense of 262 163 59 down from 318 769 32 in 1926 27. The biggest cut comes from election costs dropping from 53 780 to 14 763 28. Several departments show higher spending while many clerical offices post reductions.

Pierre du Pont, chair of General Motors, plans to support Governor Smith and may resign as chairman or quit the board if his views hinder the Smith campaign. He will not hold an official campaign post but will act on his personal choice for president. He left Wilmington for New York to meet with associates before the board meeting.

The case of William Edward Hickman, killer of Marian Parker, will be called in Los Angeles Superior Court tomorrow for a second sentencing to hang. The date follows denial by the state Supreme Court of a rehearing, with a previous sentence set for April 27 and stayed pending appeal. Under law, resentencing must occur within 60 to 90 days from tomorrow.
Tokio warned Nanking that Manchuria should not join the Chinese nationalist government and said suitable measures would be taken unless the nationalists retract their stance on Japanese special rights in China. Baron Tanaka, the prime minister, voiced the warning.

In Pittsburg on August 3, engineers at Westinghouse demonstrated “radio movies” sending motion pictures via air to a 30 foot distant screen. Leaders in radio and press witnessed the lab test noting the method could be extended coast to coast. The experiment used ordinary film and a small receiving set projected the movie in a dark lab.
