Four Wyoming Girl Scouts drowned when a motorboat capsized near their camp. Only two campers aboard were saved, while others were pulled from the water. Rescue teams recovered the victims from the lake bottom as the camp reel of terror spread through the area.
Maj. G Thenault acting military attache of the French embassy announced Lieut Dieudonne Costes will attempt a private transatlantic crossing with an itinerary from Cape Finisterre Spain to the Azores Halifax and New York. Weather alone will decide start time and a French station will broadcast once takeoff occurs.
A boat capsize near Pinedale, Wyoming, at New Fork lake leaves four girls from Rock Springs dead Minnie Fornengo Margaret Card Reda Tolton and Rita Angeli, with eight others rescued after a motorboat plucked eight of the smallest girls from the water. Betty Knox Nina Blair and Ruby Genetti are among those saved. The aid attempt followed a hike along the lake shore by a band of camp girls.
Walter J. Traffley 28 credit manager for Lindsay Lewistown company dies from injuries after an early morning plane crash in Lewistown. Pilot Jack Hidecker from Roundup suffers multiple injuries but expected to recover. Traffley dies at about 1 o clock at the hospital.
Governor Smith challenged Rev Dr John Roach Straton over a pulpit claim that the democratic presidential nominee is the deadliest foe of moral progress. Smith demanded the right to reply and offered to answer questions about his public career in Straton's Calvary Baptist church in Albany on August 7.
Major Carlo P Del Prete and Captain Arturo Ferrarin, famed for a nonstop Rome to Brazil flight, were seriously injured in an aviation accident at the School of Naval Aviation. Del Prete suffered fractures in both legs, Ferrarin had neck and jaw injuries, and a Brazilian mechanic aboard the plane was hurt.
The Salvation Army in Butte reported aiding 2,773 people in the past year. Brigadier J. Dee announced the figures at a directors luncheon, noting extensive indoor and street meetings with thousands of attendees. Tentative plans were made to begin the annual drive Sept. 24, pending a board meeting Aug. 28.
West Indian hurricane loomed off West Palm Beach on August 7 bringing 60 mile per hour winds and darkened streets. Power lines snapped as palm Beach and nearby towns faced torrential rain and uprooted trees. Center of the storm hovered east southeast of Jupiter, with forecasters warning of possible hurricane landfall between Jupiter and Daytona Beach.
Buffalo N Y August 7 Two old car makers Pierce Arrow Motor Car and Studebaker announce a reorganization with Studebaker taking an interest and backing the new company including supplying rough parts for Pierce Arrow production Allied interests of the two manufacturers control total assets near 209000000 creating the fourth largest manufacturing group in the motor industry all plans approved by Pierce Arrow board and stockholders prior to formal action.
Three Arizona street firefighters were slightly burned when an explosion occurred during a store room fire at Mrs. H. Boulet’s residence, 1131 South Arizona street. Fireman Peter O'Brien suffered the most serious injuries with burns to the left side of face and neck, hair singed. John C. Murphy and Winfield Stodden sustained minor burns to hands and arms. They were treated at St. James hospital. O'Brien admitted for observation. Spontaneous combustion is suspected as the blaze involved cans of paint and other flammable liquids stored in the storeroom on the second floor.
Harrison White, Democrat, renominated by Denver Democrats to seek another term in the First District. White had previously won a special election last December on a platform favoring modification of the Volstead law and pledged continuing support for light wines and beer if re-elected.
George E. Brennan Democratic national committeeman for Illinois lay gravely ill in Chicago as septic poisoning from an infected tooth worsened. Doctors said his kidneys failed and his death could come within a day, despite an earlier relapse and a family withdrawal of hope.
Sir J Austen Chamberlain British secretary for foreign affairs has been ordered to rest to recover from bronchial pneumonia. An official communique named Lord Cushendun acting foreign secretary and to represent Great Britain at the September League of Nations meeting. Cushendun is expected to sign the Kellogg pact though not mentioned in the communique.
Billings Montana August high note reports Plenty Cops known as chief of all American Indian chieftains transferred his Crow country homestead to the public for a future recreation area. Maj. Gen. Harbord accepted the gift for the United States and pledged a 100 mile stretch of the Custer battlefield highway as the Plenty Coos trail. The ceremony at Pryor creek marked Harbord's adoption into the Crow tribe and bestowed the Crow name War Eagle.
In Los Angeles on August 7 a lawyer challenged Frank Mellus failure to notify police for over two hours after finding his wife dead or dying Sunday. The inquest into Mrs Mellus continued as Leo Kelly, the butcher boy and alleged lover, faced murder arraignment. Kelly’s attorney urged setting a preliminary hearing while Mellus was questioned about the delay in reporting the death at their Wilshire district home.
The Italian submarine F-14 with 31 crewmen perished from poisonous gases after surfacing in the Adriatic following 34 hours submerged. Salvage teams, who lifted the craft from 131 feet, opened hatches to find the men dead as signals ceased earlier in the afternoon, though initial hopes of survivors lingered.
New York report details the Woodside incident where Glen Kirkwood, a Queens veterinary and radio lecturer, was stabbed by his wife during a struggle over a bread knife. The woman, claiming the wounds were accidental during a fight for the knife, was charged with murder after the patrol found Kirkwood dying.
Silver Bow county reports show higher assessed and taxable valuations for 12 public utilities, all levied by the state board of equalization rather than the county. Total assessed value reaches 8,651,439 and taxable 3,460,415, up from 1927 figures, aiding county status prospects amid overall property valuation shifts.
