Rising waters close highways trapping over 500 people in autos as floodwaters isolate segments of the roadway. Emergency crews coordinate evacuations while authorities warn motorists to reroute and seek higher ground. Local agencies monitor level readings and issue advisories as weather persists.
William Edward Hickman was sentenced to death in Los Angeles Superior Court for the murder of 12 year old Marion Parker. His lawyers plan to appeal to the U S Supreme Court, focusing on California's insanity defense code.
Floods rose rapidly across central Florida after the West Indian hurricane. Taylor’s Creek near Okeechobee City swelled from a 15 foot wide stream to over a mile, flooding highways and isolating more than 500 people. A relief expedition was dispatched from the stricken area north of West Palm Beach following reports from Jupiter residents.
Chicago report notes police doubled efforts to solve the slaying of Miss Jennie Constance a college professor attacked while walking from Northwestern University library in Evanston. A pencil fragment and clothing from suspect John Burke were examined along with the murder iron bar. Burke remains in custody as investigators trace Tuesday night movements and the body is sent to Cumberland Wisconsin for burial with family present.
Mrs. B C Kelsey pioneer Montana matron died in a Seattle hospital after an operation. She moved from Butte to Silverdale ten years ago and had lived in Butte for over 50 years. Survived by husband a former Butte resident and two daughters in Seattle plus several grandchildren. Born May 18 1856 the Meiklejohns were her parents. Continued on Page 14 Col 2.
Flames started by live coals from a passing Northern Pacific engine ignite slashings along the Donlan right of way and rapidly grow into a crown fire. The blaze crosses the Clark Fork river and threatens thousands of feet of yellow pine staged for logging, with about 100 Northern Pacific and Montana Logging employees fighting the fast moving fire.
The crop reporting board forecasts yields about 4 percent above recent years with boosts in corn to 3.03 billion bushels and winter plus spring wheat totaling 891 million. Montana hail since Aug 1 tops a million bushels but overall outlook remains strong against a five year average. apples oats and sweet potatoes rise while white potatoes face blight risks and possible un-dug crops if prices stay low.
A sightseeing plane crashed on Lake Muskoka near Gravenhurst today killing the pilot Capt. Charles Haynes of Detroit and a passenger Robert Erving 18 of Pittsburgh. Five others including three women and passenger Walter Phillips 19 of Philadelphia were injured. Phillips not expected to recover. Survivors include Lucy Hill Boston Molly Spaulding Buffalo and Betty Mackay Pittsburgh. James Reed of Pittsburgh among the injured.
Aug 9 The Missouri primary returns show Percer C Patterson of Springfield Republican and Charles M Hay of St Louis Democrat increasing their leads for US Senate. Francis M Wilson Democrat Platte City and Henry B Caulfield Republican St Louis also added to large gubernatorial pluralities.
Russell Kolemaine, 16, was found responsible for the death of Matt Luoma, Finnish miner, after an inquest led by Coroner Pat Holland. Luoma died at St James hospital from injuries after his car was struck at Covert and East Broadway. Kolemaine did not testify. seven witnesses, including four of Kolemaine’s friends, testified about the accident. He was arrested when reporting a stolen car they believed belonged to his father. He posted bond on a manslaughter charge. Chief Deputy County Attorney N A Rotering spoke for the state.
Pierre du Pont, serving as GM board chairman, was granted a leave of absence after attempting to resign to avoid an appearance of opposing Governor Smith’s presidential bid. The board did not accept the resignation, and it was unclear if the leave would end after the campaign. John J. Raskob’s status remains as he awaits own return to duties.
Mrs Nellie Tayloe Ross former Wyoming governor as vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee today took charge of the drive to mobilize national women for Gov Alfred E Smith. She met with John J Raskob Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt and other officials saying Western women may be counted on. She planned several days of meetings then a touring speaking campaign to strategic points across the country.
Belgrade Yugoslavia Aug 9 Peace and order have followed the death last night of Stefan Raditch leader of the Croatian peasant party Chiefs of all political organizations have urged calm and are using influence to prevent outbreaks This calm is to last at least until the funeral in Zagreb scheduled for Sunday morning.
William F. Marney accepting the Prohibition Party nomination for president accuses the Republican administration of betraying the eighteenth amendment. He questions Gov. Alfred E. Smith's record on enforcement and argues a genuine square deal is needed for enactment.
Butte residents endured the warmest day in seven years as the local 94 degree reading topped levels since July 20, 1921. The barometer rose two points from Wednesday and officials predicted August could break the 1921 high. Little rainfall and possible showers may yield more warm weather.
Four teen soldiers died in the Chicago area amid a heat wave as the thermometer reached 90 degrees at 5 p.m. at Camp Grant where National Guard troops trained. Dozens prostrated and were recovering, with Nebraska reporting higher temperatures and corn crops two weeks ahead of normal due to the heat.
The Thermopolis area hit 101 degrees, the season’s top reading, with Weather Observer G. G. Bain reporting. A nearby station logged 97 degrees on Wednesday, signaling a scorching late summer pattern.
Five circus elephants escaped in Lewiston Idaho smashing windows and cars while frightening residents. One animal was shot by Mayor EB G Braddock after a rampage through business and residential districts. Four others were captured, with extensive property damage reported and no known injuries.
Boston Republican Charles L. Burrill publishes a letter urging Herbert Hoover to remove Senator George H. Moses of New Hampshire as head of Hoover’s East campaign. Burrill accuses Moses of predicting Massachusetts losses, promoting personal favorites, and opposing the Volstead act. Moses declines to comment when informed.
