Jury to Deliberate Tonight in Butte Dr. Cayley Death Case

The jury will hear closing testimony and begin deliberations tonight in the James W. Kelley case over who fired the shot that killed Dr. Henry A. Cayley in Butte last October. Kelley testified he shot believing a man was about to assault him in darkness.

British hold out as Somali attack overwhelms force

The British detachment fought under heavy fire then charged with the bayonet but were overwhelmed. All officers and 170 men were killed before the survivors reached camp. Somali bases are said to be vast, with 3000 to 4000 mounted Somalis and about 80 000 spearmen.

Mills’ Jail Release Comes After Year Of Generosity

Herbert Mills, president of Mill Novelty, finished a year in county jail for misuse of the mails and, as a federal prisoner, enjoyed special privileges. He hosted a large Austin banket through the Oaks club and spent about $6000 aiding fellow prisoners including legal aid and clothing for families. Mills was seen as a reformer, funding cases to the Supreme Court and supporting many men he believed reformed.

Hayden is Acquitted in Billings Murder Trial

In Billings a jury found Lewis M. Hayden not guilty of murdering John P. McBride after a pursuit and scuffle. The verdict, signed by foreman W F Hemming, followed five hours of deliberation. Hayden, a policeman, contended the gun fired by accident. In Bozeman, Prof H Good was fined $85 for maltreating Elsie Cornell, a 1-year-old in a separate case.

Carnegie Donation Aids Permanent Court of Arbitration

Washington reports Andrew Carnegie donated 1500 dollars for the permanent court of arbitration at The Hague through Baron Gevers the Netherlands minister. The gift supports Holland in upholding a just administration.
