In district court Judge Wright halted the rape trial of George Gilbert, who was accused of taking advantage of Tina Belle Woodpark, an Indian girl living with a college family. The judge found the testimony lacked convicting strength and dismissed the case after noting the witness's expressed wish to marry Gilbert.
Jury and case transferred to the defendant who was represented by attorneys Morgan Morgan Watts and Martin.
Joseph Zink, world one hour roller skating champion, will perform a 23 mile 9 lap hour feat at the Cole skating rink on Thanksgiving night. He offers to skate against any five man Iowa relay team. An ensuing circle party led by Zink is planned alongside the show.
Mrs Mabel Clark leads a Saturday story hour at 2 PM focused on Thanksgiving tales for children. At 3 PM Mrs Little discusses Meals For a Day. The event invites all Ames women. Friday features the annual inter-society oratorical contest at the college to choose a state reps winner prizes include the 09 cup a $40 Wettstein suit and a $5 pennant. Contestants include Rex Edgecomb Beardshear Rex Beresford Crescent H W Wagner Philomathean Mildred Semmons Clio J H Burlingame Phileleutheros H T Hill Forum J G Emerson Welch.
Miss Clara Aplin takes the role of collector for the Mutual Telephone Company, succeeding the previous appointee. She assumes duties immediately and will oversee accounts, payments, and field inquiries from local customers.
A large audience welcomed Rev Housel at Champlin Hall last Sunday afternoon. He will preach each Sunday at 3 30 PM with Sunday school at 2 30 PM. All are welcome to these services.
After defeating Cambridge high school, the Maxwell football party rode home Saturday night in a carry-all hit by a coal car on the Milwatukee tracks. Leon Saboe was thrown onto a crossing sign, Melvin Wells suffered a scalp wound, Floyd Cooper broke a thumb, and Floyd Smith strained his back. The six players were cared for in Cambridge and later sent home. the travelers included Wells, Cooper, Smith, Saboe, Wyeth, and Elliott.
Miss Kate Agnew Chapman of Des Moines Iowa visits Miss Gladys Ackerman at Duff Avenue. She is painting water color pictures including a Tildens ad reproduction and a girl study displayed at the Tilden store admired for technique and coloring. Chapman attends Cumming Art School and runs her own art institute when home.
Clarence Ericson, missing from local directory, caused a disturbance at Welsh drug store last night. He allegedly threatened clerks with a knife when cocaine sale was refused and was fined twenty dollars and six days in jail by Mayor Wilder after trial Wednesday evening. Police Officers Smith and Buckwoldt arrested him at the scene.
Isaac Berry sued for 49.50 wages in Justice Smith's Nevada court. George Halley counters with claims for potatoes and wood. Berry testified he found potatoes in Halley's cave and planted part while eating some others. The court ruled Berry owed nothing on the wood and Berry won the wage claim, promising appeal to the supreme court. The piece ends with a jab at the season's holiday motto.
Laura Berry, who vanished from Nevada three months ago, was located in Des Moines and taken to Glenwood for treatment after her brother in law John Gearhart left his wife and child in Nevada. Gearhart denied eloping but said Berry urged him to run away. Gearhart has a wife and child in Nevada.
F H Higgins of South English Iowa a 1908 Iowa State College graduate who was imprisoned for stealing platinum cups from campus laboratories has been paroled by the board. He will travel to Texas to start anew after serving about a year of an indeterminate sentence. Pinkerton detectives helped secure his original conviction.
Fred Sies, a young Milwaukee road fireman on Train No 97, leapt from the moving locomotive to rescue a 3 year old boy lying on the track between Dixon and Donahue as the train neared Davenport. Engineer Frank Cowden watched in terror as the hero crossed the piston and grabbed the child to safety.
Profs Dinsmore and Kennedy named five members from Sioux City fair try-out to represent Iowa State College in the stock judging contest at the International Live Stock Show in Chicago. Team members are O. D. Baker, M. G. Thornburg, R. W. Cassady, J. I. Thompson, and Howard Vaughn. Coaches will guide the squad on farm tours to sharpen judging skills.
The National Horticultural Congress in Council Bluffs hosts the largest American horticulturists group. An intercollegiate fruit judging contest runs today and tomorrow with a team from Iowa State College competing against other Midwest schools.
Ames Commercial Club endorses inviting the Iowa National Guard brigade encampment to Ames this summer. The four regiments and staff may attract over 2000 attendees, with grounds to be secured by a committee led by Parley Sheldon and others.
