Bill Sutton engineer on train number 54 on the Des Moines branch was badly cut when a negro boy, as the train passed Oralabor, threw an empty whiskey bottle through an open cab window. Glass shards lodged in his face and neck. the train stopped, the boy evaded capture, and Sutton narrowly escaped losing an eye.
The Chicago run of The House of a Thousand Candles opens tonight at the Armory theater. Performers and crew present a staged drama in a period setting, with local patrons invited to attend the performance.
Dr. B F Winsett of Nevada has purchased the Jordan Ballard farm southeast of the city, just west of Shipley. The quarter section changed hands through Poage and Fischer of Nevada for 12250 dollars per acre.
The Ames Poultry Association received five silver bowls donated by the Ames Commercial club for the next poultry exhibition. Each bowl valued at 10 dollars will be awarded to the highest scoring pens of White Rocks Barred Rocks White Wyandottes Rhode Island Reds and Black Langshans.
The district court verdict awarded McCartney and Judge $15 in the civil action against Frank Stultz for commission on the sale of his Stultz restaurant and bakery. The case concerned the sale of the real estate involved in the restaurant and bakery in this city.

In Chicago at Jackson Park last Saturday the Ames five man team finished fourth overall, defeating Chicago Wisconsin and Iowa. Kemler Collins Clarkson Scott and Cressler placed seventh to thirteenth and fifteenth with Comstock finishing twentieth. Purdue’s Vassar won in 27:08, with a Wisconsin runner second and Nebraska third. Iowa qualified seventh but were disqualified due to an incomplete course. Ames earned 89 points to Wisconsin 103 and Chicago 125.
Ole Gunderson of Story City pled guilty in district court to illegal transactions in intoxicating liquor and received a 60 day jail term. The guilty plea followed last week's court session and reflects a crackdown on illicit alcohol activity in the area.
The college hosts a three day conference in Alumni Hall next Friday to Sunday, described as the Brotherhood of St Andrew week of prayer. The program begins Friday at 8 PM with an Address of Welcome by Gen. James and includes a series of prayers and gatherings through the weekend.
Mayor Waltz of this county, tried for disturbing peace threatening to kill and resisting an officer, was sentenced by Judge Wright this week. Committed to county jail for 120 days plus a 30 day sentence for assault and battery, with a $200 fine and costs.
J C Roushar a Zearing druggist was fined 700 dollars plus costs and attorney fees after a Story County district court trial centered on careless handling of liquor permits. He posted 1500 dollar bond and appealed for a reduction. a related charge of selling liquor to a minor was dropped on guilty plea to the first indictment.
The college stock judging team tours Illinois stock farms as preparation for the International stock judging contest in Chicago on Saturday. They inspect Robert Burgess & Sons at Venona, Alex Galbraith & Son's at DeKalb, Truman Farm at Bushnell, and Ano Stock Farm at Waukesha, WI, and will arrive in Chicago Friday.
Nevada city council met Monday with mayor and all members present. Mrs Maggie Gearhart sought 12 dollars for nuisance damage in block 33, but case dismissed due to statute and husband missing. City tentatively settled for 200 dollars to wife. Hines case verdict of 550 dollars appealed. Petition from Arthur Dean and 55 residents urged sanitary sewer system, plan to extend from Slough basin and tax installments. motion for a special committee to study financing failed, petition filed, meeting adjourned.
The Ames churches unite for a Thanksgiving service at United Brethren church. Public invited. Program includes opening song No. 75, prayer by Dr. Crissman, a duet, scripture by Rev. Minchin, Thanksgiving Proclamation by Mayor Tilden, sermon by Rev. Houser, offering, song No. 116, and benediction by Rev. Fowle.
A district court judge trimmed the druggist’s fine from 700 to 350 dollars in a case over juggling alcohol permits. The defendant likely accepts the compromise as the matter closes.
Fred Munn is constructing a two story 20 by 40 building south of the Watkins machine shop. Willey Brothers plan to operate a poultry and egg business there, with F. W. Willey of the city joining his brother from Carrollton, Missouri, who has long run the venture in that town.
