Maxwell Goes Back to the Pen After Escape

Glen Maxwell, held for a 20 year sentence in Anamosa, escaped October 16 by rain spout. He was captured in Carroll after a rapid chase with Sheriff Hamilton and a crowd of about 150. A bundle with a revolver and mask was recovered. Maxwell awaits transfer as guard camp plans for Iowa National Guard units are outlined, with regimental camps scheduled in August and sergeants Kayes and Wolvington reassigned.

Grand Jury Sees Little Work at November Term

The grand jury organized Tuesday with W. E. as foreman and a slate of jurors from La Fayette, Story City, Washington, Collins, Palestine and Indian Creek. They heard the case against George Gilbert for outraging an Indian girl, with testimony given by the girl Monday. Beyond that, few investigations were completed and the jury ended its session with no report announced.

In Polk County district court last week Mrs. N. J. Spencer formerly of Ames was granted a divorce and allowed to remarry. On Sunday October 7 she wed John A. Cage of Des Moines, and they plan to live in Des Moines.

Soldiers Must Study at Home

The Iowa National Guard board in Des Moines decided to require commissioned officers to take a winter correspondence course in military tactics. Brig. Gen. James Rush Lincoln will lead the program with assistants providing study material by mail for officers to answer and cite authorities. The board notes a few states have successfully adopted this training method.

Last Thursday afternoon the annual cross country run at Iowa State College covered six miles southward from Engineering hall. Kemler won in 36 minutes 47.6 seconds with Collins second and Clarkson close behind. Sophomores led in class points with 116, Seniors 36, Freshmen 35, Juniors 28. Debate results at Iowa State College and Cedar Falls

The Postal Savings Bank question was argued and won by Iowa State College debaters over State Normal last Friday night. In Cedar Falls Normal's team defeated Ames 3 to 0, first such win against the Ames speakers in six years. Ames negative team members were Joe Naylor H C Darger and Hugh Webster with F S Holcomb as alternate. Ames affirmative team included C Hutcheson Mark McDonald and E C Davis with Miss Coral Roberts as alternate.
