Turner McLain born March 28 1841 in Bedford County Pennsylvania. He served in the Fourteenth Iowa Infantry, survived Shiloh and Libby prison, lived in Story County before moving to Ames in 1892. Survived by children from three marriages. funeral at the Methodist church conducted by Rev. Geo Crissman with Masons and relatives in attendance.

Fire at the College Causes Heavy Damage Saturday
A blaze starting in the assay furnaces of the mining engineering annex damaged the college Saturday. Fire department response kept the flames from spreading, with losses estimated around 300 dollars plus destruction of books, papers, and furniture from smoke and water.

Roland Farmer Dies After Poison Drink Accident
Martin Nelson, a young farmer near Roland, drank carbolic acid by mistake instead of liquor, dying shortly after. He had stopped to stock up on carbolic acid for a sore arm, and a clerk realized the error after he handed the bottle back. Funeral services were held at Salem church yesterday afternoon.

Maxwell Park stockholders meet to elect officers
The Maxwell Park Association held its annual meeting at city hall on Monday. The board of directors and officers were re elected for another year. Railway accident near Fraser injures five aboard engine
C B Tedrow, cousin of J B Koos er and brother of Nate Tedrow, a Fort Dodge Des Moines and Southern engineer, was seriously hurt Monday when the engine he rode in jumped the Fraser to Boone gravel pit track. It leaped a trestle, struck two bridge piers, and the five aboard were badly injured before being rushed to Boone for care. Tedrow suffered severe scalding but is expected to recover.
