Col J R Lincoln veteran of Civil Spanish war and Iowa State College military instructor is the candidate for brigadier general under the new Iowa National Guard organization. He is the sole candidate and expected to win. The 1909 exposition in Council Bluffs will be national in scope with horticulturists, the National Horticultural Congress, and a doubled auditorium capacity. The guard will form a brigade with four regiments, hospital corps, and machine gun companies to be organized after July 1.

Odd Fellows Memorial Day Observed With Services
The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs held their annual memorial day with Rev. Warner Johnson delivering the address at the hall. Instrumental music by Cramblitt’s orchestra and vocal pieces by Mr. and Mrs. Conaway with Mrs. Mayme Wood accompanied the service. At the cemetery about forty graves were strewn with flowers as the line of march, led by the canton in uniforms, proceeded with Wilson Rich as marshal and Frank Rogers as captain guiding the procession.

National Horticultural Congress Exposition Heads to Council Bluffs
The 1909 second annual exposition of the National Horticultural Congress will be held in Council Bluffs from November 15 to 16. The 1908 show, first of its kind, drew fruit growers from 21 states from Maine to California, amid rapid planning and a large brick auditorium.

Murder on the railroad near Denison shocks Boone
Brakeman L. C. Warner and A. C. Brechtel of Boone were shot while aboard eastbound No. 114 near Vail. Warner died, Brechtel was fatally wounded. Two Negro hoboes captured at Manila confessed to the shooting. Funeral for Warner in Boone drew large crowds.

Gene Rushmore Leaves for Missouri Grocery Route
Gene Rushmore, clerk at Tilden grocery and former Knudson store employee, left Saturday night for Moberly Missouri. On Monday he began traveling for Davidson's wholesale grocery in that city, covering the main line of the Wabash. He will not move to Moberly yet for several weeks. He is regarded as one of the best young men and is open to guidance, hinting at a future Missouri residence.

Ames Elks convention return after Dubuque
Ames delegates who attended the Elks convention in Dubuque returned home Friday and Saturday in good shape. Darby Holmes joked about the Irish presence and said he stayed on the water wagon throughout the two days, keeping safe and sound after the event.

City Council Enacts Sunday Sale Closure Ordinance
The city council approved a drastic measure restricting Sunday sales to hotels eating houses and drug stores for medicines only. Old resident Noah Harding recalls frontier Iowa days
Noah Harding of Boone, aged eighty three, visited the Dieffenbacher home in this city on Sunday. A pioneer who settled land near Story City in the 1850s, he served on Story County's board of supervisors from 1859 to 1863 and later retired on a Northwestern pension. He shared many early day stories from the region.

Mrs Lanning Injured in Belle Plaine Visit
Mrs J W Lanning was seriously injured last Friday at a niece’s home near Belle Plaine when she opened a cellar door by mistake and struck her head on a cellar stone. She suffered a long scalp wound but no bones were broken and she is improving satisfactorily. Her husband Mr Lanning returned Monday.
