Webster City youth Martin Langland was shot and killed by a seven year old at Henry Miller farm near Roland. A small target rifle, loaded by accident, fired while Langland and companions visited and chatted with young women. Langland died within an hour.
A respected young farmer from Hamilton County, aged 22, is reported among the casualties. Details remain sparse as reports continue to flow from the rural community.
The 1909 tax levy approved at the last regular meeting includes 10 mills for the general fund, 5 mills for electric light, 5 mills for water works, 3 mills for grading, and 5 mills each for sewer districts numbers 1, 2, and 3.
One of John Thorsbakken's daughters in Story City suffered an eye injury from a firecracker explosion on Sunday afternoon. The blast burned the eye and may cause permanent blindness, endangering sight in the affected eye.
F H Voss of a farm northeast of Colo died within an hour after a traction engine exploded while he operated it. His father, nearby, suffered a broken leg and serious injuries.
Prof. H. G. Van Pelt, Iowa State College dairy farm head since its founding two years ago, resigns to join the Iowa Dairy Association in Waterloo as lecturer for Chautauqua and farmers institutes. He previously directed the St. Louis exposition dairy herd and earned a world reputation. Rumor suggests W. H. Pew may succeed him.
Bert Munden of Ames faces Jim McCoy of Des Moines in a July 3 Armory bout at 4 30 p m. Refi by Jess Reimer Des Moines, the match follows two prior encounters with a Munden victory and a draw.
City council at city hall appoints polling place judges and clerks for July 12 vote on municipal electric plant. First ward judges Munn Meltzer Stultz. clerks Carl Little A B Maxwell. Second ward judges White Potter Ufford. clerk Tallman. Third ward judges Hullibarger Rich Akin. clerks McCartney Perkins. Fourth ward judges Edwards Hoover Madson. clerks Tuttle Scott Foster.
Christina Challe of Jewell Junction was brought to Hamilton County by Sheriff Brown for a hearing on a charge of incorrigibility filed by her parents Mr and Mrs BE N Challe. Judge Lee presided and the case was continued with Christina allowed to return home on promise of good behavior after a recent runaway incident. The parents had previously sought a District judge due to her wavering conduct.
Mrs. F. M. Coulter of this city is recovering nicely from an operation she underwent at Mercy hospital in Des Moines Monday forenoon.
Prof J H Criswell former farm crops department member has been elected superintendent and manager of a Baptist Home Missionary society farm and school in southern Oklahoma between Kiowa and Atoka. The five thousand acre site includes a mission school. He will leave in about two weeks. his family will follow after hot weather.
Professor Newens went to Ashbury Park to attend the convention of the National Speech Arts association of which he is trecent. On Sunday he delivered an address before that body. He resumes Chautauqua work for the summer and will fill about 75 dates before the season ends.
At Monday council meeting the mayor appointed Mrs. Julia Stanton Mrs. Margaret Sowers and Dr. T Ll Rice to fill vacancies on the library board. The appointments were approved by the council.
A Story City Herald report states Ben Stevens’ mild cow was struck and killed last Thursday morning by a locomotive that had arrived from Ames with a stock load. The incident underscores dangers of rail activity near farms.
Summer jobers from Iowa State College joined Des Moines Bridge & Iron Works crews. Supt Kanary hired them with seasoned iron workers to hammer rivets, lift heavy steel, and shape components all day until the whistle at night.
On July 4 1910 the fourth annual graduate school of agriculture will begin at Iowa State College. Dr A C True of the US Department of Agriculture announced the session will be a national gathering of leading college and experiment workers with lectures seminars and field trips. Special emphasis will be on animal husbandry as Iowa State College is regarded as a leading program in that field.
Albert Clark has been gravely ill for several weeks and his condition deteriorated in the past week. Officials report this morning that recovery seems unlikely and his family remains at his bedside.
Miss Christina Larson aged 20 of Nevada area died after drinking concentrated lye weeks after receiving anonymous libelous letters. She passed at her aunt Mrs. Carrie Nelson’s home after weeks of illness despite doctors’ efforts. Mrs. L B Schmidt on Ash Ave. has been ill with my lamatory rheumatism for two weeks.
Mayor Wm Gates calls Nevada citizens to suspend business on Saturday July 3 to join Independence Day and ISU semi centennial celebrations at the Ames campus. He notes Fourth of July falls on Sunday this year and Boone and Story counties host festivities. Nevada June 29 1909.
Shirley Thompson owner and manager sells half interest in Scenic theatre to Leo Armstrong. Thompson plans to expand by acquiring other theatres within 75 miles to form a high class pictures and vaudeville circuit.
Miss Jessie Kelley of the fourth ward, teaching in Nevada schools for a year, is appointed assistant to Herman Knapp at Iowa State College entrance requirements. She resigns her Nevada post for a higher salary, after rapid progress from Drake University scholarship to Colo and Nevada high school positions.
